Showing music
    #3845754 - 02/28/05 10:24 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Why is it so hard to show someone new music? I think we are all a little guilty of it at times. I have almost stopped trying to show people music. Everyone agrees to listen to your new band you just found, but then automatically compare it to something, or start to attack it after 15 seconds. Even if they do shut up long enough with the critiquing to actually hear the song, they usually shrug it off as "ok". I finally now have to trick people into liking bands. I will play them something at first, and tell them the name of the band and how great they are and other details.... then when they shrug it off, the next week I slip another song by them into a mixed cd and say nothing about the line up. 9 times out of 10 they always ask in a curious voice and a hint of affinity in their voice, "who is this?". Some people would tell them who it was, but you have to go further than that..."im not sure who this is, just some cd a guy at work gave me.... you like it?"... usually they emphatically say yes and then you tell them who it is.... therefor, they are forced to now listen to their entire work.

mmm, not really. Music is all I do pretty much. I am a music nerd. I can give band tips for any genre of music almost and when i hear someone ask "hey have you heard about mars volta" then i know which bands to tell them about.
This thread was mainly about why people are so stubborn to accept YOUR music, when they would have probably really liked it if THEY had found it by themselves.

I'm guilty of doing that all the time.. I've tried to be better about it, but it's so hard. When I'm with one of my "emo" friends*, they could be listening to megadeth and I'd probably shrug it off as some stupid new emo band. But if I had heard that song on my own, I would have been playing air guitar all over the place.

*replace with whatever genre you please

I have done a pretty good job of shedding that stubborness. Once you do, and actually go listen to every CD someone mentions, you will become more well rounded. Also, the more music and different music you listen to, the better your musical playing skills get....because.... you can only play as good as you listen.
