Tool... Show me the light
    #1711197 - 07/13/03 11:09 AM (20 years, 11 months ago)

Loads of people on these forums seem to sing Tool's praises but from what I've heard they are generally extremely loud and a bit scary.. What am I missing? If you are Tool lover what do you get from listening to them?

I only ask because they seem very different to all the other musical suggestions given here. There's a lot of screaming and freaky samples and stuff.. seems to me like it might induce a bad trip.

I like to think of myself as very musically open-minded and I'm not afraid of loud music so I want to appreciate them.. guess I just haven't seen the light yet! Whats the deal?

Tool does have a lot of aggression in their music, but it's aggression with MEANING. There is also a very spiritual element to their music. If you listen to a full Tool album, especially Lateralus, I'm sure you'll have little doubt that they are all heavily into psychedelics(I know for a fact that the drummer does DMT). Also, Tool isn't just all aggression. They also have a lot of calm moments in their music. But the heaviness is also EXTREMELY trippy. I know that when I'm tripping, I sometimes have this violent feeling of wanting to jump out of my body, and I find that Tool complements this very well. Listen to Lateralus while tripping. That's an order!

Rob, you're probably just listening to the older stuff which is pretty 'loud and aggressive' on the surface.

like silversoul said, smoke a bowl and listen to their album 'Lateralus' all the way through.

and if you have a really good set of head phones use those. you can hear every little drop of sound with a good set of head phones in lateralus.

Oh, I thought that was Discipline

I've got a few of their albums.. My favorite is 'Beat' ... It has such a unique feel to it... Reminds me of a city during the night.

Some of their tracks I don't dig as much, but most of them are fuckin awesome. They are definately one of the most original bands I've heard. They have some sort of really confident alien attitude, heheh.

tool's music is the thunder of breaking free and the flow of energy in the very air. like said above lateralus is the best  single cohesive imprint of intent/emotion/energy ever marketed to the masses.
they give the reason to wake up and how in the same line of music.

intelligent, spiritual music...think about it.  :bong: :mushroom2:  :tongue2: :oogle:  the music of life and death... and then rebirth.

TOOL has matured into the likes of King Crimson, Yes, Rush, etc.
time sigs based on phi, subliminal magickal incantations, lyrics w/ multi-layered meaning.
only the music has become Much more powerful through technology.

Aenima and Lateralus were engineered by David Bottrill (Passion w/ Peter Gabriel) @ Ocean Way.
the guy knows what he's doing and has what he needs to do it.

Fred Durst said of TOOL, "Those Guys are too tight"
Maynard has admitted to voluntary possession on stage,
and Danny invoked a Daemon into his kit for the Lateralus sessions.

this is one of the tightest bands on the planet working w/ one of the best engineers.
make sure to listen to it through cans w/ a wide-open mind.

btw, there is no such thing as a bad trip... only bad trippers.

I think you guys are forgetting about the Aenima album! I mean c'mon! Stinkfist, Eulogy, Aenima, all fucking great songs to trip to...the whole album is really, except for maybe Intermission and Die Eier Von Satan, hehe.

Especially in Lateralus, aside from the fact that I am taken away by such spiritual content, the Music is what gets me.
They use so many bad ass time changes, polyrhythms and every other combination of non-4/4 time. I try and count along but it's damn near impossible sometimes.
Lateralus, the song, has a chorus that's a bar of 7,8, and 9. With the lyrics in a syllabic pattern of the fibonacci sequence - 1,1,2,3,5,8.......

I understand your position Rob. All my buddies got into Tool before I did, i resisted because it sounded too angry. But i wasn't reeeallly listening. Get past that initial point that even tho it is loud and aggressive, it is not necessarily Pissed Off. All though some of there older stuff is....

It's music for boring nerds who like chord changes,
forty string guitars, black clothing, modernism, and
Mayan calendars.

I like Tool, I especially like "the patient" and "disposition", I think the lyrics are nice. I like Lateralus, I think it's more positive, and less complainish.

Uhh tool isnt for boring nerds, its for people who likes music without any boundaries and something thats actually different from all that crap you hear on tv and radio.

"...I'm sure you'll have little doubt that they are all heavily into psychedelics.."

Maynard doest use any drugs but he's really into meditation and spiritual stuff.

Yeah Tool is the shit. Very spiritual music. Obviously heavily influenced by psycadelics. I doubt that Maynard "doesn't use any drugs" like Soulfler said. If thats so thats kind of dissapointing and a little confusing considering how he talks about prying open his third eye and shit. Not to mention he specificly references drugs in his songs such as special k, and H (heroin) etc....

where are those specific references?

I've read in a few interviews that he doesn't do drugs now, but his fav is mushrooms i believe.
He said something like it's ok to use psychedelics to get a peek into what is possible, but you must learn to get there on your own in sober reality.

er something.

btw, it's funny you mention 'chord changes', in relation to key changes-tool rarely goes out of D minor. Also, 'forty stringed guitars'-adam always plays a les paul w/ 6.
Boring Music? I find it hard to drive, or carry conversations over Tool because it is so intriguing. Only a few other bands have ever done that to me.

No those aren't specific references. He says "down that hole and back again" in Third eye. I can only assume he means special k. "phosperescent desert buttons" = payote. Maybe he doesnt do drugs now, but he sure has done them in the past no doubt. Thats all I'm saying.

Third Eye, IMO, isn't about drugs. It's about reconnecting with your inner self.
Maynard did enjoy mushrooms in his earlier years, but doesn't do them anymore (if not, probably hardly ever). I doubt Maynard doesn't do ANY drugs on the odd occassion; the rest of the band is known to dabble on occassion.
Anyway, that's not really too important. Whether or not they do drugs doesn't change how inspiring Tool can be for me.

Third eye is about prying open your third eye with the use of drugs instead of meditation. Its also about seeing yourself again for the first time. Man I've met people who say theyve done drugs with some of the guys from tool.

who knows what they do? i read an article that asked flat out if maynard did drugs. he said no, but he used to do mushrooms. you will read into alot of his songs, and fins that they can refer to drugs.......but that doesn't mean that he had done the drugs.

the songs go deeper then the obvious alot of times. you'll think you know what the song is about then you find out it about something else. stink fist? about fingering someone (obvious image) its about a friend of his and a journey. 4 degrees.....lots of different stuff on this one. the anus being 4 degrees warmer then the vagina, but also about letting your self go completely. being fully open.

i don't know about the drug habits of the rest of the band. i don't even know maynards habits. i do know that they are a rediculous band, and they write rediculous music. it also doesn't take a nerd to listen to tool, it just takes someone who likes tool to like them:)

Yes maybe maynard said in an interview that he doesnt do drugs. However maynard is notorious for giving out misinformation in the press. Oh and you cant pry open your third eye with meditation, thats bullshit. Drugs man Drugs. Maynard does drugs. Acid, shrooms, payote, all kinds of shit. Believe it.

tell that to the Buddha himself...
I hate to start a tangent.. nah fuck it.
What? Why would you say that? what makes you capable/experienced enough to say that?

Maybe it's just unfortunate you've had no success with meditation.
But I think meditation can do infinitely more than drugs, but drugs can show you what meditation is capable of.

uh oh, did i start the "do mushrooms give you enlightenment or deceive and cloud your mind with false reality" argument?

Tool are superb.
Check out any of the music videos that they've released to see true visual works of art - especially Parabola, it makes me feel like I'm tripping when I'm 100% sober
Musically I just love how layered the music is - the kind of layering I usually get off on with Goa Trance.
Tool are musical pioneers dude!

Plus Maynard is a big Bill Hicks fan and that's golden in itself.

Rob - if you don't have broadband then PM me and I'll burn some Tool vids onto VCD for ya

Im not saying you can't open your third eye with meditation. The key word here is "prying". It's possible to open your third eye with meditation no doubt, but I think Maynard means that he is forcing it open with the use of drugs.

I wish I knew how meditaion works so I could be more informed on this, but I do know what drugs do to enhance your spirituality so I guess thats how I relate to his music.

Tool has some of the most incredible music I've ever "seen", "felt", and heard. There are very few bands out there with the total package.

The lyrics to me are over the top. Extremely profound references to spirituality, the occult, philosophy, and SOOOO much more. Plus Maynard constructs his lyrics on many levels...and with APC as well. In fact, APC's music is somewhat more mellow, but the lyrics are very much related to Tool's message.

In today?s times of mass produced, processed music, Tool is
a shining light of non-conforming artistic expression not
confined to marketing fads and the all mighty dollar. Tool
experiment openly with their music, inviting the listener,
bored with the norm, to expand the comfort zones and
experience something totally fresh.

i also remember the article where maynard said he didnt do drugs, but used to do mushrooms.

i think people forget that these guys are nearly 40, im sure theyve all done

you guys should read toolband.com.. it really gives you some insight into the world those guys live in..

pretty sure H isnt about heroin.. the working title of the song was half empty/half full, you might check to FAQ on toolshed to verify.

and king crimson is amazing.

theres a live version of epitaph labelled as being performed at the filmore east in '69.. dunno if it really was but its an awesome version of the song. awesome.

i'd wager that maynard likely meditates FAR more than he trips, imo.

to me:

Opiate represents initial raw anger of the situation.  Seeing how fucked up everything is around you and being so pissed off, all you want to do is scream and scream and scream.

Undertow represents further investigation into the anger.  Perhaps a realization that 'you' are just as much caught up in this bullshit as the people you are screaming at.  Memories and emotions rise to the surface.

?nima represents acceptance that you are lost and that things must change.  Coming to terms with your dark side, confrontation with yourself, and ultimately the rediscovery of something very very pure.

Lateralus represents the light after moving through that dark tunnel.  Realizations about many aspects of life.  The interconnectedness and significance of your life, and the opportunity that surrounds you every day. Not surprisingly they have to dedicate the first song to the flushing of negative emotions.

The evolution their music takes is beautiful and inspiring.

btw, bivalve:  40 string guitar? lol...  good thing you said that or your opinion on the subject might actually have to be considered

on the tool website it mentioned for one of thier birthdays recently they all took acid, maynard included so meh

also, i'm not the only one to have noticed this but it seems like there is a part of tool's music that they know they're not quite what they claim to be.

i've always found tools music boring while tripping. i think its music that is meant to inspire poeple to higher states more than music that actually comes from higher state.

like i said i'm not the only one of my friend's who has noticed this, they seem to be a little melancholy about it even.

I don't listen to TOOL that much just because their music is so god damned powerful and it takes me awhile to build up to that point where I am ready for the experience.

Same! After my last trip attempting to listen to lateralus in the dark i just couldnt handle it like i thought it was very intense. I havent listened to it since, not that its bad or anything, its wicked! but the cd represents so much more then just a cd-basically what grav said.
