Nope, xept rahzel, hees cool, not really rap. I prefere something with "music" in it. Anyone can rap to a beat. It takes REAL talent to write music. At least good music.

ever heard Outkast? you might like them... i always tell people to listen to Kool Keith (AKA Dr. Octagon, Dr. Doom, Black Elvis) mainly because he's unlike any other rapper. check out Del the Funky Homosapien and Gang Starr as shr00m said.. Dead Prez is great IMO... also Mr. Lif. Check out Aceyalone for sure, i think you'll really like him. good luck in your search

You've heard 'This Ain't a Game'? I'd like to hear your thoughts on it. Why don't you like it?
He's probably the best UK garage MC I've ever heard. (If you can even call it garage now! It's not even garage rap, really. But, whatever they call it.) The beat sounds kind of like the build-up parts in 'One Mic' and it's got a new kind of rainy, sad, Nas-y New York feeling that I've never heard in stuff from London.
I hated a lot of the Dizzee Rascal album totally because of the production. It's bad but I'd love to hear him over more hip-hop beats like 'This Ain't a Game.' (There's a mixtape track where he does a freestyle on the 'What We Do' beat but I can't find it anywhere!)

hmm, you did not flame me...
I actually mistook the song, but I have heard sharkie major before. For me it was at the level of "oh yea, he can rap" but nothing I was really into. For me, rap has to sound new, becuase it (almost always) is musically simple, so people that do something fresh and try to have their own sound are the ones who stand out to me... This results in alot of people hating my tastes in rap, becuase my interests dont follow any kind of logic in terms of "type" as in "oh, I like underground rap becuase it makes my feel cool and edgy, but I really prefer linkin park" or whatever...

Do you think the mainstream has the freshness right now or not?
A lot of more experimental underground stuff, like, stuff beyond just the Atmosphere/Slug/Aesop Rock stuff, the really noisy, bizarre stuff. Like, um, Boom Bip, maybe. It sounds experimental but all of the funny-sound-ness is just being stolen from IDM and it's hip-hop because someone mumbled stuff over it. And it's unpleasant to listen to and you can't dance to it.
On another thread I said I liked mainstream hip-hop because of innovation + when I listen to it and enjoy it I know that lots of other people are getting enjoyment from it + the actual emotion thing. I think I picked 'Grindin'' as the example of that, all three things.
I could find songs that sound weirder and more musically complex than 'Down 4 U' but there are no underground rap songs that have the same beauty. There's no Ashanti! There's no psychedelic, wavy, melancholy Irv Gotti production!
I'm not even making a point!
I think my point is that freshness isn't everything and Ashanti is awesome and moves me. And David Banner and Pastor Troy freak me out, so bombast can trump freshness, too.
I was just listing songs I liked, not songs that I thought were some special thing, I guess.
And I think I had a point that was like, There are good kinds of experimentation and bad and something can sound fresh but bad but freshness plus the other things mainstream rap has equals it's good.
None of the points are very clear.
Make a list of twenty tracks you love right now.
I know you like 'Hey Ya'! I was going to put that on my list.

Rap isn't like other music cos it's got rapping in it, and that's the main feature. Hence the name rap. Listen to the rapping, not the music, and you might be more impressed.
For me, nobody beats Tribe Called Quest.

oh, there is definetly some creativity in the mainstream, but I turned off the radio a while ago becuase i was sick of hearing only Dr. Dre/swizz beats/whoever does the Roc's production
but some popular rap I can definetly appreciate...
as for my list, do you mean new songs? Becuase I am kinda slow on the uptake as far as whats cool goes, and i rarely hear whats on the radio.

rap music takes talent to do. End of story. Psychopsilocybin is a complete moron and should have his opinion rights revoked. When you start writing rhymes and making beats and getting somewhere with it. You obviously don't know anything about hiphop or rap music to say that all you need is money and attitude. EVer heard Dead Prez? Blackalcious? Talib Kwali? Mos Def? Tech n9ne? Any of the older Outkast stuff? No, you haven't. GO back to your suburb and listen to your techno or nu metal or w/e the hell it is you like.

You've just demonstrated a complete lack of knowledge of both rap and music in general.
I can't understand people who make such idiotic sweeping statements. How can you dismiss a genre that you clearly know little about and have had little experience of?

If you're gonna get into rap music, start with the basics, the shit from back in the day that made it really popular. Go for the old school gangsta shit: Public Enemy, NWA, EZ-E, Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre, Tupac, Biggie, Wu-Tang and all the satellites and solo projects therof, 666 Mafia, De la Soul, all that underground new york shit, anything from new york is usually good, especially 90's era.
Then you got your doctor octagon, Cypress Hill, and all the jungle/DNB/triphop DJs and mcs...

fuck mainsteram rap.. go for the good stuff
Del The Funky HomoSapien Gza (Liquid Sowrds) Souls of Mischief Hieroglypics Dangermouse (Grey Album) Digable Planets (Blowout Comb) Dr. Octagon (aka cool keith, get dr octagonacologist) Atmosphere Qbert & Mixmaster Mike Mos Def Talib Queli Black Star (Mos and Talib together) Digital UnderGround (Sex Packets... that's a fun lil' album)
and of course
DJ SHADOW (Entroducing)... although there are no real vocals
In the words of CHUCK D... RAP is not music... RAP is a verb.. it's something you do .. "HIP HOP" is the genre. That's like calling the rock and roll genre "sing" and the punk genre "scream".
..

i dont like a lot of rap, but i have some mos def, jay-z, and older eminem that I really like. I don't have time to dig through all the garbage anymore, there are many other genres that have much higher rates of worthwhile popular artists.
mainstream rap is as good as devil-preachery. you might as well tell people barely getting by is all you need to do in life, cuz some of the rap they play on the radio is so fucking bad i want to kill myself.

I don't know the old school shit because I only heard what my druggie friends told me I would like.
The same people who say hip hop sucks today are the same people who were attacking Jazz 70 years ago. Hip-hop music is here to stay. Because it allows more ideas then regular lyrics, it allows a lot of creativity. Because it is really innovative, it allows bridges between several different art forms, like poetry and music, drumming and spoken word, stream of consciousness and sound, that normal lyrics don't cover. This expands the amount of ground a creative artist can cover.
Yeah, a lot of rap music is really really bad. A lot of any genre is really really bad. So, rather then get stuck in one genre, where you are gaurenteed to get some shit, you take the best stuff from each genre, and get only good music. There is good rap music.
The trick is to find the guys in each genre who do a lot of psychedelics. These guys are gonna be the good ones. In rap, psychedelics are uncommon, so you have to go underground to get the guys into psychedelics. They are way good.
Some not mentioned:
Eyedea and Abilities (start by d/l 'Even Shadows Have Shadows' and then get the Oliver Hart Album The many faces of Oliver Hart) Aesop Rock (start by D/l "The greatest Pac-Man Victory in History", his tribute to LSD, and proceed to Float or Labor days) El-P (Direct intellectual link between hip-hop and jazz, great stuff) Mr. Lif (good politics)
I would have to say Aesop Rock is the best one I have heard. Some people say his stuff doesn't really count as rap, because it's so impressionistic and dadist and complex. It's good though. Get some.

i dunno what to even post in this thread
not everyone can relate to each and every single piece of art laid on the table. some people think pollock is a genius while others think he's a phony and a piece of shit. some people think rembrant is fantastic while others think he's fucking boring and noncreative. some people think escher is on another level while others simply say its all technical drawing and nothing more. needless to say, theyre all on a different format, no?
people have different tastes. some people dont like certain things, some do. i'd have to say i disagee with alot of the posts in this thread on both sides. there are about a billion arguments i could go either way about, pro and anti-"rap". however, i could write an entire book about this shit and don't even wanna go into it. there's so much to cover.
you can't hate on those who have disdain for our beloved artform. it's most likely people who dont appreciate it haven't experienced the true essence of hiphop. when they think hiphop, they probally think of the SHIT they see on television.
true artists will always touch us through music, no matter what the genre is.
