My friend's cake is in a coke bottle. There's a moist paper towel and verm on the bottom. The cake is on the towel. It's a 1/2 pint cake of Gulf Coasts which took really long to colonize (6 weeks). It's been in the coke bottle for 3 weeks. It started pinning after 2 weeks. So now, a week later, and the mushrooms are growing SO slow... And they are very thin and small. What is wrong? There's about 20 pins on the top and bottom, and the biggest mushroom is about 2 and a 1/2 inches long, but it's so thin (thinner than any regular pinhead would be). What could be the problem? My friend thought that these thin-pins would fatten out, but they have not. If things continue like this, her yeild will be so tiny. She's got a jar going invitro, and it's mushrooms are three times the size. What's wrong? I'll post a pic in a 30 minutes..

could be a number of things...maybe not enough air exchange..maybe its just a shitty strain that you ended up with when the spores germinated..whered you get your spores from?

My friend, screw the cakes, case - you'll be much happier with everything. Make a small casing if you have to - cakes are not the way to go if you are concerned about yield.

She fans the bottles 3-5 times a day.
The spores are from 3m.
-She just innoculated 4 jars with EQ's from 3m, we'll see how these go...
Oh, and she did case 1 cake about a week ago, mycelium is just popping up now...

hmmm.the slow colonization doesnt make any sense..3m has a good reputation for using whole prints for syringes..wich would ensure optimum germination if you do everything else right..i dont know what your prob is although id like to help..can you post a picture? maybe someone with a bit more knowledge could give you a hand..

DO NOT USE A PAPER TOWEL IN YOUR GROW CHAMBER!!!!!!! This may introduce contaminants. also the cake may not be growing well bc the moisture content is not high enough. dunk the cake for about 6 hours but make sure you remove all primordia before dunking.

thin scrawny mushrooms suggest that there is a moisture availability problem, as traditional cake method tends to yeild bloated shrooms. slow groath with no foul smell suggests yeast contamination. is there an off smell?

There seem to be 2 factors:
-airexchange might be too low, therefore the thin mushrooms that abort early,
- do they get enough light? If they are kept dark then they get very long thin stems.

Well, I think that the humidity is ok, and that the air exchange is good. But Anno might be right, the reason is maybe because they aren't receiving enough light...
My friend used to give them 1 hour of artificial light each day. She would sit the cakes on her dresser, and her bedroom light would be on for 1 hour. Since pins started showing, she hasnt been giving them light. This is a bad idea right? For future flushes (if any) she should continue giving them lots of light, correct? Hopefully this will solve all problems.
