Hydro-pod problems
    #860924 - 09/03/02 07:40 AM (15 years, 22 days ago)

I bought a domed hydro-pod, and my cakes have been in there for about 2 weeks now. I got a few mushrooms so far,, but by no means a flush. I was wondering what was wrong. I bought a cheap little humidity gauge and put it in there last night. The humidity level is only at 85. I even closed the fresh air exchange knob on the top of the dome, but that didnt help. I have the pod air tight, and I even tried to turn the aquirium bubbler up. the RH still read 85. could my guage be wrong? or could this all be why my cakes are seemingly retarded?

thx.

thx for your help by the way...

aerial mycelial growth? Im thinking that means if I look down on the cakes I should see white fuzzy spots growing on my cakes... well, there are little white fuzzy spots here and there. but for the most part, the cakes have turned a bit whiter since I birthed them, but I dont think I'm getting the mycelial growth that I am supposed to be getting.
And the few mushrooms that I have gotten have been small. The reached maby a couple inched long before they started to droop and die. I have alot of little aborts as well.

I have 8 cakes in there right now, and I only used one syringe. For my medium, I used b. rice flour and verm. I prepared my substrate with a pressure cooker. I cooked the jars for 1 hour... so i dont think this was the problem. But the spores I used were kinda slim... the print was almost gone. Plus, I didnt have a needle with my syringe, so I skipped the dry verm layer and just inocluted through one hole in the middle right on top of the substrate. I basically just squirted it into the jar.
they took about 4 weeks to colonized. since they took so long, and since the spores started working from the top of the jar down instead of the middle going both ways because of not having a needle, I assumed that the uncolonized substrate was dried out. so I birthed all but 1 of them early.

before I start, thank you so much for your help. this is the best customer service I have ever had.

I dont have an incubation chamber.... I just put the jars in a kitchen cabinet that I sterilize and coat with plastic. The temp in there must be about 74 degrees....

how can I speed things up?

While you're helping with Hydra-Pod questions:

It seems that the Hydra-Pod's gravel-to-cake wicking action is a key benefit of the unit. So it should therefore make sense to have more of the cake touching or nearer to the gravel.

What do you think about laying cakes on their sides in the Hydra-Pod instead of setting them upright?

I know that if the cake were a perfect, smooth cylinder and the gravel were a perfect, smooth, flat surface this wouldn't make sense since the contact would be a line. But neither is flat, so putting the cake on its side may actually increase surface contact with the gravel. At the very least, more of the cake would be closer to the gravel.

Thoughts?
