anyone with problems with incubating chambers??
    #1525868 - 05/06/03 11:05 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

this foaf i know made many batches of wbs and pf tek jars, all incubated in the same large rubbermaid with the second underneaath with aquarium heater and water +bricks. so anyway the foaf checked the box after 13 days, w/o opening at all during that period of time, and noticed that only (potentially) 1 jar went to contam, but that many had not germinated on one innoculation hole, and that the other innoc spots were no bigger than a penny, after 2 weeks (the wbs jars were penny sized, and the pf were a little farther along, say 2 by 2.) so the analysis at first was no big deal, too much water, can fix that next time. but then the foaf was wondering if any other ppl had any similar probs with slow growth because of absolutely no air exhange, or if he just f*cked up the water ratio. (the wbs was exactly 6T's tek, so 6T, give me your analysis.) much appreciated.

Especially w grains, some air exchange is desirable during incubation....often recommended is a 1/4" hole in lid, covered by a micron or tyvek filter, or stuffed with polyfill. PF jars are usually slower than grain (so it sounds like your wbs could definitely use some better air exchange since they are lagging), but PF also still benefit from some air exchange.....though as you know, higher CO2 is desirable at that time. Fucking up the water ratio (too much H2O) really can have a bad effect, though..... everything kind of turns gooey and goes nowhere. It's hard to tell which is the issue in this case. For grains, use a larger exchange hole than just inoc holes, like 1/4", but with the filter. The incubator setup that you described is perfect, though.

alright, will do, maybe i will solve it by taking off the lid and throwing on a big blanket to cover it.

you should set your jars upside down for a day or two, it lets the co2 out, that helped me before.

The guy on the street said he likes to use a medium sized container (2-3 quarts) for perlite humidification inside the incubator. This keeps up the humidity inside so the jars won't dry out (and maintains your carefully tuned moisture content).

Jake,
Just wanted to clarify.... I was thinking not about the air inside the incubating container as much as the air exchange into the jars themselves, which is why I suggested a 1/4" hole in the jar lid esp for grain. For the incubator, there should be enough air even with the incubator lid on.....since the lid can help to control temps and keep up humidity so the jars don't lose water by evaporation. However, I do recall Anno's picture of his incubator (see link below), and he was doing the blanket thing. And... you know, what works for Anno.....well, it WORKS!
