someone correct me if i'm wrong, but one major rule of thumb is to look for bluish purplish coloration in the stem or around the cap [is that right??] that indicates the presence of psilocybin. [again, is this right?]

You seem way too eager to gulp those things down and they just might kill you.

Calm down, take a spore print, and post a description. If they turn out to be active (I suspect not) then you will have plenty of time to safely enjoy them.

Until your mushrooms have been positively identified they should be considered deadly poisonous.

i'd take a few more pics and try to give the most detailed description you could, steve. shroomy is right, you certainly don't want to end up in the hospital over wanting to surf the ether right now.

Your mushrooms have not been identified and may be deadly poisonous. If you want to be insanely stupid I can't stop you, but I will lock this thread unless you post a proper description of those mushrooms.

It is critical that you describe mushrooms fully and accurately in order to get a proper identification.

What state are you in?
What was the mushroom growing from?
When you bruise it does it change color?
What color spores does it drop?

Your pictures are not adequate, they are blurry and the color is off. I also cannot see what the mushrooms are growing from.

The blue reaction is useful, however some other species of other genera also blue or have a bluish color yet are not active. Some of those species are of unknown edibility, some bolete species poisonous.
Checking for blue bruising is just one feature that has to be used in combination with other features such as spore print, habitat, etc.

Your not wrong, but your not entirely right. There are some blue bruising boletes that are poisonous. Blue is not always going to be psilocybin. The only sure-fire way of telling is by taking a spore print and posting proper identification information posted in this main forums sticky thread.

I recommend you post a better form of Identification than just a picture... Take a spore print and read this forums sticky thread on how to give proper information for an ID. I've seen these often, but the name slips my mind... I doubt they are actives, but they do somewhat resemble cubes. spore print color and the habitat they were found in/on/around is the most important keys right now in identifying your mushrooms. Until then theres not much that can be done.

we picked them today in northern california. they were growing on a hillside on the side of the road in some leaves annd dirt. the gills are dark purpleish greyish and are crowded. the caps range anywhere from 3cm to 8cm. and the lenght of the stems are about 4-8cm. the stems diameter is about 1 cm. the stem color is offwhite with a hint of orange at the botttom. the stems are not hollow. the caps color is yellow offwhite with a hint of orange yellow. the caps are roundish. the smaller caps have small nipples. the spore print is greyish ppurple and they bruise blue. they smell like mushrooms

I don't understand how you could even ask whether to eat them or stay away after ShroomyDan's explanation. This is not a flame, but you need to read posts more carefully especially the green names with the M next to them because they are the forum moderators. Once again this is not a flame, I'm just trying to keep you from eating a toxic mushroom.

When hunting active (magic) mushrooms you should go out looking for a specific species of mushrooms. If you are looking for cubensis mushrooms then make sure you are looking in the right habitat in the right conditions, this will help your search alot. Be careful out there!

Looks like you have something in the Stropharia genus. possibly Stropharia riparia. Its common in California.

Stropharia riparia is what I was thinking, the name slipped my mind earlier (evans right). I find these in gardens and mulched beds and in rich dirt. Your mushrooms are not cubensis. Although I noticed they do closely resemble some of the wild ones. None of the mushrooms in your pictures bruise blue. Maybe it makes you feel cool to say they do, but.... Anyways proof of your "blueing" is now a concern.

Sorry dude, there is no bluing on those mushrooms. Bluing is really unmistakeable.
