Mushrooms found in Southeast US

Alright folks, I've seen tons of individual posts about this area, so heres what can be found in the area, where to find it, and what time of year to find it... finding pictures and descriptions is up to you(the reader)... You have to do your part too . I live in Georgia, so I know the most about Georgia mushrooms. Feel free to add *accurate* information. For more information on these mushrooms I reccomend that you visit the Grow/Find section here at the Shroomery, or go to www.erowid.org Something to take note of: If it grows on manure, chances are it will grow any where in the field, not just directly from the mauner. If you are feeling generous enough to post pictures, go for it . Just make sure to label your pictures accurately. When hunting, keep in mind that the farther north you are, the harder it is going to be to find mushrooms(well, north of say... Atlanta). Georgia: Species: Panaeolus subbalteaus. Where: Found growing from hay, horse manure, grass compost piles, and sometimes on cow manure. Found all over the state. When: From Spring to Fall Species: Psilocybe cubensis. Where: Cow manure, sometimes Horse manure. South of Macon, east of Agusta- rare elsewhere. When: Late spring though early fall Species: Copelandia/Panaeouls cyanescens Where: Cow/horse manure. Extreme southern Georiga When: During summer months, when temps are 80s-100s during the day Species: Psilocybe weilii Where: Found growing from red clay/dirt, in areas where the soil has been disturbed within the past 5-6 years, esp. in newer neighborhoods. Found North of Atlanta When: Summer months, temps upper 70s-90s Other: Little is known about the habitat of this mushroom. It was recently discovered in 1995 in Cherokee County. This mushroom has only been found in Georiga. This mushroom is considered rare. Speices: Gymnopilus spectabilis Where: Growing on moist decaying wood When: Fall though spring Florida: Species: Panaeolus subbalteaus. Where: Found growing from hay, horse manure, grass compost piles, and sometimes on cow manure. Found all over the state. When: From Spring to Fall, year-round in the south. Species: Psilocybe cubensis. Where: Cow manure, sometimes Horse manure. When: Late spring though early fall, year-round in the south. Species: Copelandia/Panaeouls cyanescens Where: Cow/horse manure. When: During summer months, when temps are 80s-100s during the day. Year-round in the south. Speices: Gymnopilus spectabilis Where: Growing on moist decaying wood When: Fall though spring Alabama: Same species as Georgia, except for P. weilii Lousiana: Same species as Georgia, except for P. weilii Mississippi Same species as Georgia, except for P. weilii South Carolina: Species: Panaeolus subbalteaus. Where: Found growing from hay, horse manure, grass compost piles, and sometimes on cow manure. Found all over the state. When: From Spring to Fall Species: Psilocybe cubensis. Where: Cow manure, sometimes Horse manure. May be rare in SC, found in southern portions of the state only. When: Late spring though early fall Speices: Gymnopilus spectabilis Where: Growing on moist decaying wood When: Fall though spring North Carolina: Species: Panaeolus subbalteaus. Where: Found growing from hay, horse manure, grass compost piles, and sometimes on cow manure. Found all over the state. When: From Spring to Fall Speices: Gymnopilus spectabilis Where: Growing on moist decaying wood When: Fall though spring Tennessee: Same as North Carolina There are a few species that I have not included in this list because they are either a very rare occurance or they are hard to identify(some speices of Panaeolus). Good luck hunting. Peace out, -Gumby

I am not 100% sure that they are found there, but they are a pretty widely distributed mushroom, and I don't see why not(they're found in Florida, almost identical climate). Gyms are a fairly common mushroom in the fall when its starting to get cold. Peace out, -Gumby

Urbanator,
I have never found Amanita muscaria "Fly Agaric".
I live on the southwest coast of florida.
I have heard of them growing along the panhandle of florida, Most notably Pensacola. Jacksonville also though.
They also are said to grow wild in Texas.
So, it is possible that this mushroom grows in your neck of the woods (new orleans).
A variation of Amanita muscaria, is Amanita muscaria var. formosa. -This mushroom looks the same as fly agaric, except the cap is not blood red in color, it is more of a orange/yellow colored cap.
We have observed the variation specie growing as far south as atlanta GA.
Keep shroomin, gg

Gumby Dude, You ar saying that G. spectabilis is in Louisianna but there are no recorded rcords of that mushroom in that state whatsoever.
It has not been found there as of yet.
Mj
However, Copelandia cyanescens is and so is Psilocybe cubbensis.

Ok, I was just thinking about how GG had found some speices of Gymnospilius in Florida, I didn't realized that he had found G. leutifolia(sp?). I'll let you be the authority on this one MJ.

I didn't include Amanitas on any of the lists because they aren't psilocybian mushrooms. My guess is that most people are looking for the traditional "shrooms" and not A. muscaria.
From what I've heard the Amanita "trip" isn't all that fun and, most people end up nauseated and eventually vomit. For those who don't get sick I've heard that its more like a drunken state of delerium than a trip.
I don't know about you, but its not placed highly on my list of things to try
Peace out, -Gumby

LoL... sounds like A. muscaria var. formosa to me. Most people report having mad stomach problems/vomiting/neasua when they eat them. If you're looking to try Amanitas, go for the blood red ones, A. muscaria var. muscaria.

I have a theory that they grow throughout the southeast where conditions are favorable for them to fruit, I bet they're much more wide spread than currently known, it's just that people are not searching for them in other states because of lack of information.

Like ghostly said seneca s.c. ive read that they were also found in alabama. I would imagine its due to a lack of hunters. But if they grow in Mexico. And are all over north and some parts south of Atlanta. They can be found and quite positive they are. With thorough searching. I just find it impossible for them to not be all over the southeast. Just need to look.
