...I also have Guitar Pro. So you typed out the numbers until you got a good drum beat or did you compose them somehow?

Well, both. I've been struggling with Guitar Pro for quite some time now, it is a fucking bitch of a program to compose with, but once you get it, it opens up into being a powerful program... I put the numbers in for the drums (got the ones I use memorized ), and I have a certain style that comes out. I try to have some progression with the cymbals and everything, and always try to keep a lot of points of interaction between the drums and the rest of the musikk... I've actually discovered that working on the drums is one of the things I have the most fun doing.

Thanks for the tips, Swami! When I start recording, I'll definitely be taking a producer approach to the songs, and will start gaining experience looking at things from that view...

It won't be too long before I'd have a complete band and would be ready to tour. Right now I am having trouble convincing a couple of people to move up here, and am instead focusing on songwriting... once I have the songs, the rest can be arranged around that.

does anybody remember the little xylophones made of metal that you give infants to play with so they dont get bored?

have you ever heard one of them play one?

so they didnt create the process, but they have little if none musical expierances to draw from and create the tune they played.

or another question that kinda cancels the last one, parents these days play music to thier kids when they are pregnant, does that effect how they create music when playing a xylophone.

(bump)

someone said earlier music is a language.

one way of looking at it is, music (and the other arts) is a language which is unique each time it manifests, and which self-referentially creates its own grammar and syntax even as it communicates information with its vocabulary.

another, similar way to look: a piece of music is a universe with a beginning, middle, and end. while it is playing, it creates its own physical laws, and then tells a story of an event which takes place under these laws. it announces itself.

all the notes in a piece of music exist relative to all the other notes in it. the music is its own context.

I dunno, whatever

I've thought about this question too, which is why --for a while now-- I've been looking into creating my own instruments; maybe ones that are acoustic and self sustaining (i.e. don't require electricity) but complicated enough to produce some interesting sounds. I have a couple books about musical instrument design.

Another approach the question:

Think about the preformers of classical music. The guys that composed the music are long gone, but the preformers take pride in their own rendering of the original score. Pianist's are praised for their technique and their ability to draw out the emotion of the peice. Now if you expand that idea and say that-- even if you compose an original peice of music, maybe a jazz peice for example, you are simply taking the jazz chord progressions used by other composers and rearranging them. So you can't take credit for that style, only for your interpretation of it. The thing that I've noticed is: no two people can produce exactly the same music. You're style is like your fingerprint, it is unique to you. Your style is reckognized in the sublties, the inflexcions, of your instruments voice. Your music is always unique. If you really want to stand out though, you need to explore new harmonies/dischord patterns.

yes, but with out 'you' the music wasn't created in the first place so although it's only a piece of the system it's a damn important one!
