last sunday, while tripping alone in a quiet dark room, i started to hear the most beautiful music and it took me awhile to realize that i was hearing this music out of my own head. has anyone else heard music while tripping?

I hear music a lot when I trip. Not like music with instruments, but more like sound frequencies having fun with each other. It is always amazing to me...

There is actually a machine, built by Ray Kurzweil, that picks up frequencies from the brain and plays them back to you. It is supposed to be one of the most amazing things... It's like a live concert coming straight out of your head, or beyond. It is fueled by your thoughts and emotions, so it's always different. You can tape it and play it back later, and it will still be interesting, but not as intense as it was while you were "jamming". You don't need the machine to hear it, but it backs up the phenomenon scientifically (sort of). It's not just a hallucination, it's there.

if you are talking about the same thing it is called the music of the spheres you can tune into whilst meditating (or tripping) by focusing your attention to the back of your head/top of the spine, in time you will detect a high pitched tone, focus on it and it will grow and expand.

Its a fairly common phenomenon while meditating, the music and sounds. They're eminations of the mind, subtle but pleasant distractions from meditation itself. Sometimes to me they sound like symphonies of pure tone (the best equivelent I can give you, and I really do think it is a good comparison, is the sounds, tones and feedback distortions on Radiohead's Kid A or any of Sigur Ros' albums. This is a conclusion I came to after I myself attempted to recreate the mental music and a Musician friend of mine gave me a mixed CD of both artists - it is not exact, but the tones and textures of sound are nearly identical), and other times they are natural musics; During a deep winter meditation I began to hear the sounds of tree and bullfrogs singing as they do often here in the spring out in the marshes by my house at night. It was a full binaural sound, eminating from seemingly everywhere around me. And it did exactly what my mind wanted it to - it distracted me from my meditation. Sometimes it is difficult to remember that the 'visions' are not the purpose of the meditation, but rather an affect of it. Ish

whynot meditate on the sounds of the frogs/insects? they must be intruding for a reason. from one, know all. also by focusing on the music of the spheres, you will be rewarded with sheer beauty and lucidity.

i had mescaline once.. everything turned into music for me. (maybe because i had just left a club when i started into it) i went and sat on the beach and this piece of wood started singing opera too me. no like.. odd shit. but beautiful beautiful opera style singing to almost tribal beats. i thanked the peice of wood and left it be. the whole day i heard music coming from all around me. and if i listend closly enough i could tell were it would come from. the clouds. the grass. the trees. the water.. they all had diferent songs to sing to me. the odd part about it. is that the whole time the music was coming from the back of my head.. like the verry verry back. i supose just on the mesc i was picking up "others" tones instead of just my own. anyway it goes.. it was the most beautiful music ever. -monkah

I don't have any links right now, I read about it in "The Age of Spiritual Machines" by Ray Kurzweil, and there wasn't all that much in that book about it, so don't buy it if that's all you want to know about. (It is an excellent book though, and the subject matter is as the name implies, the future and intelligent machines/ people existing much closer with machines.) Ray Kurzweil is the inventor, take a peek around. I might try later too, so if I find anything I'll let you know.
