Not many reports back from actual DB users. You'd think they'd give a couple away here to get folks talking about it more (hint, hint).

If you don't feel like getting all the stuff together yourself, this would be a good way to go. But you can do well w/ found or store bought manure. FOAF just plucked another 85gm monster from a poopalite terrarium. Next time through, I'll get FOAF to take pics and write up a tek since the DBers seem to be sworn to secrecy. Seems like it would be a good tek for portabellos.

One thing to consider.. If you go this route, you could end up w/ a bucket of mold (or worse). If you want to spread the risk out, maybe prepare extra grain spawn and just case some of it.

Believe in yourself, keep an open mind and enjoy a spirited sense of adventure.

The kit was designed to work with no air exchange. But that doesn't mean that the compost won't grow shrooms if you add fresh air. It will probably perform better. If you apply some automated air circulation you will also have to add a casing layer (50/50+ or vermiculite) to keep the surface from drying out. Then you will have to monitor and adjust humidity. This compost works great with the proper environment (Hawk has plenty of pictures of this). Mine did pretty decent for just letting it sit there. Though I will be looking towards improvements on the next batch. As McMan would say " lack of fresh air is a big problem". Its no secret that shrooms love fresh air and contaminates don't breed as easily.

I have a DB kit and right now im getting my first pins. I was wondering about excess water on the surface, like big beeds of water...should I suck them up with a syringe or should I just leave them there? Oh ya, I've been fanning briefly with the lid of my terrarium twice a day, should I?

Don't mess with the water. The first set of shrooms will suck it up. I don't know what fanning will do since I did not fan mine. Just let us know how it goes.

Beads of water on the top layer of mycelium will not allow growth of that area. It's no different than asking you to live under water,and Because the water is stale it is more likely to breed contams.
I have used DB a couple times now and I will post results soon.
NO one here lives in your house or climate you may have to make a few desions on your own IF the water is beeding up on the top layer I like to take the corner of a paper towel and put it in the water so that it get's sucked up.
But that is me.

Yes, fan 2 or 3 times a day. No, don't suck up the water. The shrooms will (quickly). It's very amazing to watch.

Would love to hear how things turn out. Is this an authentic DB kit or one you did yourself?
