The problem with fanning it is your going to dry up a lot of the moisture. The compost is optimized to have that much moisture and not need fanning. You may be limiting additional strong flushes by fanning it.
Once again, we do not recommend fanning it.

Ryche,
2nd flush is coming through, although pinning is ONLY on sides of container, none on surface area. The only thing I can imagine is that spores dropped and killed off the top layer...any suggestions?
I didn't let first flush get that far though (enough to drop many spores)

Not to worry, we see it fruit from the sides of the container quite often. They still grow very huge. Sometimes they produce big masses of mushrooms on the side that just swell and get fatter and fatter.
Watch out for these.... exremely potent.
We also see them grow from the center surface on 2nd - 4th flushes. Your next flush will probably be the center. Those mushrooms will utilize all the nutriants in that compost and fruit all over the place
BUT, perhaps the all the fanning and drying the surface caused this... jk
It will be fine, just let it ride. And if you dont pick them so early this time they will increase their size a good 20%-30%.

yeah, in most bulk substrates you do need to case. That is just not the situation with DB compost. They have already worked so hard to make sure the optimal moistue is kept within the DB compost to not need a casing soil, or misting etc....(in these small kits)
That and the wood chips which gives it a natural casing texture already, its not needed, with this paticular subsrate in these small greasy rubbermaid boxes. It holds all the moisture it needs just fine. And then some.. if you read past post by HD he not only had puddles of water on the top surface of the compost, he dried it off and continued fanning. He already took some moisture away from the natural process of metabolizing. And he over heated it with a heating pad to begin with. He has alredy gone away from the original DB insrtructions.
Yet.. still success!! And damn good success thus far from the pics.

There is more then adequate water in this compost, in fact its about 70% water mass to begin with. Its made that way specifically for this compost recipe in these kits. The puddles of water here and there are normal in the beginning stages. The mushrooms absorb that as they fruit. If you get a build up of water in the bottom an 1" or more deep, then drain it. That is rare though. These kits create a mini rain forest inside and they dont need a casing soil (or misting and fanning) due to this and the wood shavings giving them a natural casing soil texture. But if you take this compost out of these small enclosed areas into a more wide open greenhouse style of growing then a casing soil is needed.
And in a large wide open area such as in a greenhouse some additioanl humidity will be needed.

McMan, we do appreciate your input, and -Clyde- and I both love your MC design..... in fact we think its a brilliant design if you apply everything written in books out today. But it applies to a lot of "thoery" out there that is correct, yet its not the only answer. Just as THE DB KIT and DB compost is not the only answer.

Stamets wrote about compost some 25 years ago..... and his writings of compost due not apply much of what home growers are doing today. He moved on to other things 25 years ago and a lot that he has written about since then you have incorporated into the MC and its also correct.

so much more to say...but its late and I need some sleep. I would love to expand on this further and I will, but I'm about out of time for tonight and will be out of town this weekend. More to come.

Hawk, I've been a respectful customer and referrer and all that stuff for years. yadayada

But you really piss me off when you say stupid cock sucking shit like:

"Sometimes they produce big masses of mushrooms on the side that just swell and get fatter and fatter.
Watch out for these.... exremely potent."

Yeah everybody, be forewarned, the shrooms growing on the sides of your dbkit are so much more potent than the ones growing elsewhere on it. Thanx for the warning hawk, we'll be careful.....

Over the years I think I've probably read the word "potent" written by Ryche Hawk more than all the other times I've ever seen it combined. My B+ is the most potent, my EC is most potent, my Cam is most potent, oops I got a new strain, it's the most potent, the shrooms coming on the sides are most potent, next week it will be the ones in the iddle.. ..........etcetc

what's up? Do your sales go up 5% every time you manage to get the word potent in a bb post or something? If so, disregard this, I understand....

Is mycofile in a bad mood today?
You havn't read a lot of my post over time on my thoghts on Ecuadors, cams, B+, because I dont think they are that potent compared to many others. Cammies are more energetic and get more visual at higher doses... B+ same as cammies... ecuadors make me real sleepy and dreamy type feeling...long story and I hate to explain all this again as I have many times. I guess you missed it.

Anyway, in these kits they do sometimes develop these "blob" like masses of mushrooms that swell up and almost grow into balls... -Clyde- calls them biomass.... they are very potent. Then again so are all the other mushrooms growing off the compost.
excuse me for not going into more detail last night or now on this, I just dont have much time. It has nothing do with sales, in fact I"m sure I will get a bunch of question on this down the road.

Ryche, if you take prints from these mushrooms, why do you let them open so much, if you look at the spore laden caps, you loose half the spores this way!

When is the best time to pick them for consumption? Just after veil breaks correct? Or should you wait a little while after that? Thanks in advance...

They havn't lost to many spores  Each cap produces millions of them to begin with  What's a few thousand lost he he he ....;)
The problem is there were a lot of other flushes coming up at the same time. While spending hours preparing one flush for harvest and de-capping for spores, several more flushes are maturing. These mushrooms mature so fast, capturing spores is a lot of work. While your busy in the lab for several hours with one flush, you come out to find the others maturing quickly, and sometimes over maturing even for spore production.
Picking them when the veil breaks for personal consumption is one thing.. and much much easier. But capturing spores in that 6-8 hour window they give you of several large harvests at once is A LOT OF WORK!!! And what happens if we are in town running erands when they decide to through that spore dropping cycle.
We cant capture them all perfectly, but we do our best
