DB Kit Failure/New Growers be warned
    #361294 - 07/26/01 12:08 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Everything went great at first. I got my kit for a wopping 100+ dollars. I ordred extra rye bags and all. I just figured since this was my first time growing, this kit would be for me. Any new grower out there...be warned this could lead to an expensive failure. Anyhow..for the last week I have been fighting mold in my kit. I have cut out huge chunks of the compost but it always comes back. Today it overran what little was left of my kit. Man..how depressing is it to loose 130 hard earned dollars. Maybe in a month or so i can afford to get all the necessary items for growing in jars or something. The sad thing is..i followed the directions for growing to a t. I never even opened the top before i noticed the mold. I was extremely clean when i mixed it all together. I showered before..new clothes..latex gloves. I even went 1 step further and put micromagic filture disks over the holes. I wanted to be extra safe with this expensive investment. I should have repasturized the compost. I just dont know what went wrong. Good luck to anyone out there with this kit. Seems i have had a bad experience. Hopefully I will rebound and have the desire to grow again. I know i will get this right sometime. Thanks for listening to my venting.

This is how it goes sometimes when you put all your eggs in one basket. I personally feel the DB sort of tek is not for beginners, but rather those that have succeeded w/ cakes or cased grain.

I hope this one failure doesn't cause you to loose interest. Next time out, maybe try spreading your risk a little by preparing several jars. Then try your DB kit again once you're more familiar w/ getting fruits to form from fungus. Know what I mean?

Anyway, sorry to hear about your loss. 'Hope things go better next time.

Believe in yourself, keep an open mind and enjoy a spirited sense of adventure.

Ack, sorry to hear that, skoal. That sucks. I had the same problem once with a similar setup. Came home one day and fond mold attacking, so I cut it away. Then I grabbed a huge can of lysol, kicked down the door and went in a-firin'. Gave the room an unhealthy dose (respirator on, of course). I've had very, very little problems with contams since that day. I guess they just got scared of my demeanor and decided to split.

Good luck with your next try. If you haven't already, try doing some cakes first. You can learn a great deal from the process, I know I did.

Later.
-Ankh

yes, it is amazing how much you learn from your first few batches...as most people have already said, it might seem like the way to go (with the DB kit) but it's probably got a better chance of survival if you've at least got a few grows (preferably casing) under your belt to help deal with things...this hobby is vastly dependent on experience for success...

Thank you everyone for your support, information and encouragement. I thought about it this afternoon and have decided to scrape enough money together for the PF tek. And I have also emailed ryche. Hopefully he can help me out. Once again..this is not a flame against his kit. I just wanted to give other over zealous newbies my little experience. This kit is best left for those who can handle to loose that much cash if things go wrong. I just got way too excited thinking about having ounces of mushrooms. Truth is, I don?t even know what I would do with that much.

yeah, for a first time grower pf tek is the way to go. try getting a nice easy strain to grow at first like b+ or pesa. then after a 20 cakes or so you can try casing them which makes substantially more and is not too hard. good luck!

Maybe your extra precaution of covering the holes with filters is what killed ya - I think air transfer or lack of is what breeds the mold. Maybe you restricted the air flow and made things more apt for mold... just my 2cents.

As far as I know..i thought those filter disks were meant to stop particles and allow air to pass. But obviously I am new at this, and that might have screwed it up.

try asking ryche hawk if he will replace some of the products that got ruined. that guy has got to be a billionare by now so i dont think he would mind giving up some extra stuff for someone who gave him soo much money, when all that stuff probably only cost him 40 bucks.

i may, fucking drop something natural somewhere and it might grow into another piece of shit like you. i dont recognize any of you fucking people, youre not real, you came out of comic books.

Not necessarily. Another good way to breed contams is to expose your substrate to the environment. They're just guessing. People have succeeded w/o any air exchange holes at all. Don't beat yourself up over it for no reason.

Are you saying the an un-vented kit would need to be fanned during spawn run? I would disagree w/ that. Fanning begins when pins start forming.

Have you done many of these sorts of teks mcman?

I was under the impression that no air exchange was needed during the spawn run. My projects get "o" air exchanges while colonizing. It seems that his project should have been ok without air exchange during the spawn run. And that the holes should have been more important for fruiting. Don't blame yourself. Is hard to say what really went wrong?Talk to Ryche. He maybe able to help you out. If you need help with spores let me know.

I would disagree with this. For pining a decrease of CO2 levels is allways beneficial. Take a look at the P. cubensis Growth Parameters .

Aren't you saying the same thing ?
To decrese CO2 you have to fan then pining is started or accelerated, that's the way i see it. Anyone ?

Peace,
MAIA
