DB kit bust

My friend's DB kit was a total bust....everything was beautiful until right before fruiting when a small spider had crawled through one of the holes for air exchange and died on the mycelium. My friend noticed the spider and opened the kit and sterilized a knife to remove the cold, dead carcass. My friend noticed some whispy mycelium growing on the spider, but he figured it was just mushroom mycelium, but on retrospect my friend thinks it was probably green mold mycelium. About 6 hours later my friend returned from school and noticed a 1 inch by 2 inch band of green mold where the spider was. He cut out the substrate and tried to control the mold with H2O2, but all was lost, the mold grows very fast in the dung. The largest mushroom grew about 2 inches before it started to rot. As we speak he is getting ready to throw it all out, as now there are even gnats flying around inside the kit, and the green mold continues. Needless to say my friend is very sad about losing mushrooms, 100 bucks, and a month of precious mushroom growing time! He had even planned a camping trip with friends to use the giant Thai cubs that this kit could supposedly produce. He's very, very sad. He's going to stick with PF tech from now on. My friend has tried 3 growing teks and none have ended in such a disaster as this.

I had a thought that something like this is bound to happen using wide open holes for air exchange. You could get some pipescreens from a cigar shop and glue them over the holes to keep the bigger insects out..

I wonder, what's the purpose of these gas exchange holes, anyway? I tape my holes shut as soon as I've innoculated. I guess if you're having major green mold problems it's a good idea, otherwise it seems like the holes would just be inviting contaminants.

Man that is really too bad. $100 is a lot of money to end up with nothing. Maybe you and Ryche can work something out. That's just too bad! Grimace

My friend isn't really looking for stuff from Ryche (though that would certainly be very kind), just a warning that things can get into your DB kit easily. The time wasted is the worst part...now he'll have to wait another 1 -2 months for the sacred fruits, as his dried supply was used up quite a while ago. With the clandestine operations most mushroom cultivators have, DB kits will tend to be in places like closets or basements where it invites small flying and crawling things looking for a nice, moist, warm place to hang out. It seemed to me that the DB kit is a bit too simple and doesn't leave room for corrections and safeguards against contams. My friend didn't have cobweb mold, he had actual cobwebs!

I just don't like the idea of putting all my hope in one large casing. It doesn't take much before it's all ruined. It would be nice if you could somehow partition the casing or use two seperate chambers. I just could never get used to doing hudge casings, like I see some people doing. It's nice to have some kind of backup. Grimace

Thanx for the tip! My DB is almost fully colonized and ready to come into the light. It's been in a trash bag so far.
