liquid culture failure * 1

afoaf innoculated 4 separate L bottles of media with 2 different strains (g. teacher, b+ sporeprints from sporeworks) (1/2 of each syringe into a bottle)
of the following media:
per L h20:
20g brf
20g oat flour
2.5g tryptone peptone
2.5g yeast extract

after several weeks, there are no signs of growth. afoaf is assuming that the problem was in the media, either the yeast extract or the tryptone.

any ideas as to what could have happened?

Sounds like you either had bacteria in the liquid culture or you used the liquid culture too early or too late.

there was no growth at all, be it fungal or bacterial or mamalian

to early or too late? as far as i know, microbiological media usually doesn't have short shelf life,
anyway, used it shortly after it was autoclaved, with more than sufficient cooling time.

does anyone know why yeast extract or tryptone peptone would inhibit fungal growth?

Yeah, I don't know what the fuck you're doing...a liter bottle is way too large for a liquid culture in the first place. Secondly, when you grow mycelium in liquid media, you want to isolate a strain on agar first and then place the isolate in the solution.
For a liquid medium, you have way too much stuff that's insoluble. Why not try just malt and water?! You want your liquid to have only liquid, no solid.
You probably want to stick to BRF/Vermiculite for now...don't jump into experimentation unless you've done everything else that's been proven to work. Hope this helps.
