Liquid Culture - Tea
    #4772570 - 10/08/05 11:02 AM (18 years, 3 months ago)

Greetings all, after observing a cup of old tea lying about a friend's house, i noticed the seemingly prominent growth of a brilliant white fungal infection, obviously some kind of mold, i wondered whether simply tea could be used as a medium for spores to germinate and colonise in a liquid culture, or does the medium have to be more glucose-rich?

it could work but tea would be a little too dark to spot contaminants in

Good point, but maybe green tea would do the trick?

I believe the sugar is the primary nutrient thats allowing the growth, you can try
an experiment with what you have on hand, one glass with and one without sugar in
order to determin if thats correct

yeah it has to be glucose rich... only certain types of sugars work.

like...

Honey
Karo light
Malt and Dextrose

In the UK you will get glucose in the baby food section in supermarkets. I have used it on its own, but find honey far better. Malt extract is also in health shops, not just brew stores. I have heard of people using molasses (treacle) but it is dark and harder to spot growth. A tiny bit of treacle and glucose should work well.

I have also used apple juice successfully. Just add 1 part juice to 2 parts water to get approx 4% solution.
