Liquid culture inoculation of straw... possible?

a buddy just got ripped on a $500 kit (probably from STP). instead of a substrate like rye, millet, or anything like that, it came with LCIP (liquid culture inoculum powder) which is probably just dextrose or some shit. It says to grow mycelia till liquid is 50% colonized, then pour right onto the straw. Im worried that the huge amount of liquid used will invite contams before the mycelia can take hold, and due to the large size of the kit, that would be really bad. Is it feasible, or should i just use the colonized LCIP to inoculate grain jars?

I'd use it to inoculate grain jars...then use those jars (after they have colonized 100%) with your straw sub. I would think at 50% colonization would be an inviting home for open-air contaminates to find their way inside. Not to mention its a LC..ever more the reason to take extra sterile precautions.
This is just my thoughts/what I'd do though.
