After pressure cooking a recent batch of jars filled with vermiculate based substrate for an hour , i noticed that the substrate seemed far too hard when i went to inject?? What happened??

You may have baked them dry.

make sure you somehow stop water from evaporating out of your jars. i like to use foil tape. just cut into squares and put over the holes. i've had great luck with that.

Put a washcloth or rag under the jars next time...the water had probably evaporated from them comming in contact to the very bottom of the cooker.

To cut down on evaporation during sterilization, just TAPE UP YOUR HOLES. I use waterproof plastic packaging tape, which doesn't come off or buckle during the PC-ing / boiling process. Then I poke the needle through it when innoculating and tape over the puncture holes to seal the jars again.

actually i always put a cloth on the bottom of the pressure cooker. Yeah, im going to try and tape up the holes while i sterilise. Im not sure how your mycelium can breath if you retape the holes...never worked for me...

you have to take the scotch tape off after pcing and before innoculating so it can have air exchange to colonize correct? Or am I confused?

if one were to use scotch tape would he also have to use tin foil when p.cing?
thanx

Wouldnt the tape create a dangerous pressure build up in the jars
while theyre cooking? It seems like just putting some foil over the jar
would prevent moisture from entering and escaping through the holes.

I think the tape should come off after you have some colonization.:)

Probably packed them too tight #1
if you're pressure cooking BRF/verm half pints, only 20 minutes is needed. one hour for steaming
have to cover them with foil while cooking to keep water from leaking in
if you opened the pc before it was down to 0 pressure or "quick cooled" it under water the moisture would have boiled out
some possibilities

I used waterproof first aid tape with breeding microholes (the same you use when you get injured) to prevent possible high pressure inside the jars, i tested the substrate water content after PC'ing, it might need i bit more water (+10ml per quart jar) because of a little water loss to the outside but it's still OK to innoculate. I put aluminum foil then secured the foil with rope. After PC'ing, the foil had formed a dome indicating presure leak from the inside of jar. I have one jar made this way with 40% mycellium growth after 14 days, no contams and with consistent substrate.
The microholes also let the mycellium breed during growth time. I'll be using this from now on.
Cheers,
MAIA

About pressure buildup in taped-shut jars: no, the jars won't explode; the plastic (or what have you) is weaker than the glass and would blow out long before the glass breaks. But hey, wear safety goggles if you're worried .
I always re-tape my jars and they colonize just fine; air exchange may speed up colonization, I don't know, but it doesn't seem to be necessary. And taping your holes ensures that no nasty contams are going to waft in and ruin your cultures before they're done colonizing.

Just make sure they're waterproof.

BTW, the microholes only let the air out, so no need to worry about contams getin inside.

Duct tape, cover all four holes at once. Fold the ends in to make tabs.

No, duct tape's no good, if you're trying to prevent your water from boiling off, anyway. It buckles up along the grid lines and breaks the seal in a dozen places. I haven't tried ordinary masking tape, though... I assumed it would come right off in boiling water, sticky paper that it is.
