Quick question concerning sterilization

When jars are prepared to be sterilized in a pressure cooker, should the lids be tightened completely? Does pressure build up in the jar itself? We're finding that leaving the jar lids loose for pressure to escape is causing our water/substrate ratio to not be consistent. Any ideas or methods would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The lids need to be left loose to allow for maximum thermal penetration. Sounds like you need to adjust your water:grain ratio. See this thread http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum2&Number=347459&page=8&view=collapsed&sb=5&part=all for more info. on that.
