To all the mods: Why 5 shrooms?

Who ever thought to put up the 5 shroom system? How many times have you gotten anything other than 1 or 5? I have nothing other than 5 or 1 shroom ratings. Would anybody care to take the time to decide between 3 or 4 shrooms? Hell no! You either like something somebody said or didn't. Nobody wastes their time using this system. I am we would all appreciate a 2 shroom system. Then you could just give a % next to the persons name. It could be a rotten shroom or a fresh shroom. Does anybody see where I am coming from? Anything more than two is pointless. And what is 3 shrooms for? You might as well not even rate them if you are just going to be nuetral. Unrated posts are automatically nuetral, right? Please, somebody explain their opinion.

Thread ratings do not count towards user ratings. 

And 5 shrooms is just a nice number, and it looks cool :smirk:

i like the idea of a %rate, but rates are pretty meaningless and just a popularity contest really, even if presented with summary stats like n, SD, rate/post etc. they'd not represent much. now the green trade shrooms, those are worthwhile if you like to spread the good news.

i dunno where the 5 came from, it's true that 2/3/4 votes are pretty thin on the ground. it sure does look cool have five though  :thumbup:

well the 5 shrooms would allow someone that % you are talking about.

If you have 20 5 shroom rates and 10 1 shroom rates, you arent going to have 5 full shrooms sitting there...it will show an according percentage...

The code that displays a rating on the ratings page is different than the code that displays ratings on the rest of the site. I just updated the code that displays ratings on the rest of the site to more accurately display a reflection of your rating.

As you noticed, if you add up and divide to calculate your rating, the number you calculate can be different than what is displayed. This is because a rating can only go from 1 to 5, but we display ratings from 0 to 5 in 1/2 increaments. The range of 1 to 5 is scaled onto the range of 0 to 5 for display purposes. Any rating that averages to 4.8 or larger should display as five shrooms, not 4.5.

Shirley Knott, as of this post, you have 123 rates for a total value of 584. This averages out to 4.75, which is below the 4.8 cutoff requied for a 5. (Remember, with the scale going from 0 to 5 rather than 1 to 5, it is harder to get a 5 than it used to be!)

By typing "select sum(rating) as sumofrates, count(rating) as countofrates from generalrates where username='Shirley Knott'" into the database by hand and looking at the result. (more or less)
