Hello everyone. Ive got a quick question. Ive just sent off my order to PF a couple days ago ( takes around 6 to 14 days ,Thanks to PF's great service). Anyway my question is can I make my jars (PF tek) and pressure cook them now? I dont think the wait isnt a big deal, but better safe then sorry. This is my 6th time growing and hav'nt had any contam. and had had some GREAT results. Only because of the shroomery ;)

Yes you can, but realize that with each passing day, they are more likely to become contaminated. And what if your spores don't come for four or five weeks? It's been known to happen with PF. I would wait a little while if I were you.

I have read that it doesn't really matter how long the jars are sterilized before you innoculate. Different teks will say different things. I myself have ordered my spores from Hawk's a week ago and sterilized my jars today. The SCGT Tek states you can sterilize and store.

As long as you use a lid with no holes, you will be fine. This proceedure is no different than canning, the lids should invert with a pop as the can cools a vacume lock is present preserving the jar. I believe you can by pre-packaged jars un-inoculated mail order this way. Like I said there is no difference in this and canning, so sterilize as usual with new lids and they will keep for at least 5 years....

It makes sense to me egoless.. But two things... Do the lids (with no holes) need to be loose during sterilization to keep them from cracking from expansion during the heating and reseal themselves upon cooling? I don't have any experience with canning so it may be a stupid question... Second I think that the nail or whatever is used to poke holes in the lids needs to be sterile.... I think "canning" substrate is an interesting idea...

No, you don't need to loosen the lids, there is pressure placed on the jars from the pressure cooker, higher pressure lower boiling point.....The blowing up of the jar, better loosen the lid thing is myth, there will be no more pressure in side the jar than inside the cooker....follow me? And about the holes, as long as you use a good verm seal on top of your substrate and the nail does not penetrate that seal, there will be no problems. A friend can get a good seal will old lids a pot, no pressure cooker using masking tape over the holes, but I wouldn't recommend this for long periods of time. A friend also lets overly moist jars colonize undisturbed w/no light/ no air movement/ and with no lid on at all sometimes.

Thanks for the reply egoless... I really like the idea of "canning" my substrate... Let this be a message to all: "This board kicks ass"... You can learn something everyday!
