Unwanted Mushrooms!

Alright, I have a housplant in my living room. I put polished river rocks over the soil to make it look pretty. The other day I removed some of the rocks to see how moist the dirt was. To my surprise there was a yellow covering over the dirt. Looked smooth and firm. Not anything like p.c. mycelia. But to my surprise I saw a few baby mushrooms poking out. I have never brought any spores near this plant and they are definately not p.c. Anyone know what kind of mushrooms I unknowingly cultivated? The reason they are unwanted is because pets may eat them, also I live in Massachusetts.

Then it?s most likely Leucocoprinus birnbaumi.
It?s not poisonous. You bought it with your potting soil ;)

i have the same problem...
Mushrooms are growing in 2 of my houseplants. It's funny because it only started after I started growing the special kind. I haven't repotted either of the plants any time recently....at least 6 months. They are not near a window or anything. I haven't seen these mushrooms growing anywhere nearby in the fields or grass or any other plants. They are even two different kinds of mushrooms in both of them...one is similar to the one you mentioned...but much lighter. The other is a white mushroom with a brown spot in the center and going out from the center brown spot from that a bit are a few specks of brown.
It's strange...I haven't ever had them before...but now that I cultivate...they all show up....I must be the mushroom queen or something! Karen

The plant has been in the same pot for well over a year. No new soil has been added. Also I used the same soil for other plants and nothing has shown up.

The book says they are not poisonous, but I wouldn?t neceserilly eat them.
It also says that they are occuring almost exclusively in potting soils, very hard to find growing in the nature.

Actually, that mushroom is known to be poisonous to some people and is more commonly known as Lepiota lutea, the Flower Pot Parasol. If that is the correct mushroom. L. flavescens is another yellow greenhouse specie, also poisonous.
