Mushroom Size

What makes some shrooms so much bigger than others? Is it the size of the mycleium network? The amount of water the mycleium is exposed to? or is it just a combination of different things?

I believe it is the size, strain, water content in mycelium sounds about right; and also SUBSTRATE, from germination to casings.
I believe growing environment (outdoors, indoors) also has its variables.

And light. No light will often make mushrooms grow very skinny and in random directions.

size is up to how much nutrients the mycelium gives the mushrooms. When you get aborts that is because the mycelium stoped giving that mushroom nutrients and gave it to a faster/stronger growing mushroom

Like Psi said. It all comes down to nutrients and the amount of time/care you put into it.

do you think so? I would dispute that, IME not enough air exchange causes them to grow skinny, although I think they use light for direction in initial growth I think I am right in saying that when the shroom prepares to drop spores it switches to gravity orientation because no matter which way they grow at first they will always flip up to drop the spores down

yeah you are right about the light but thats it,air exchange has nothing to do with why some mushrooms grow bigger in the same batch at all it is nutrients.example you have EQ cased in a grow chamber now your telling me that the air exchange is different from one side of the grow chamber to the other and that why you get some bigger mushrooms then others? It's like this mycelium main goal is to spread it spores and if there is a mushroom that is growing stronger then some others it will take the nutrients from them to give to the strongest mushrooms because it's main goal it to spread it spore as fast as posible and all the mushrooms that are cut off from nutrients start to decay because the have no nutrients and that why the aborts start to change colors to black(food was rerooted to a stronger growing mushroom).Didn't you ever notice that when there are really really big mushrooms for that strian that there are no other/few mushrooms besides the the really big one or two mushrooms, and why there is alot less mushrooms in the 2nd flush compaird to the 1st flush and even less in the 3rd flush more so the the 2nd flush these are B+ mushrooms that grew from the dunk&PF tek and they were the only mushrooms that grew on the cakes.I wish I could have found the picture of pesa that grew on a pf cake it was awesomely big in size and it was the only mushroom on the cake the reason being it took all the nutrients up so no other mushrooms or pins could forum but you get the idea from this picture

Ide think light went into the care cadegory. Im not saying it all depends on light. More on nutrients and water content. But in some of my experiences, light has effected the size of the mushrooms.

light has nothing to do with care.
As long as there is a window in the room, there will be sufficient light for your mushrooms to grow. In fact all your mushrooms really need is a few minutes of light a day to grow. All they need the light for is to know which way is up so they know which way to grow, but the amount of light given will not affect wether you get mushrooms or not. The heigth of your mushrooms will also not be determined by the amount of light provided. Sometimes mushrooms will grow longer if they have less light.

yeah that is my point it all comes down to mainly nutrients.
deep substrate = alot more nutrients to give to the mushrooms
more nutrients = less aborts and stronger growing mushrooms
that's why you get bigger and better flushes when you case the mycelium and you also get less aborts too.

So is there anything that I could use to give the mycleium more nutrients so that my mushrooms grow larger(they are outside, in my yard by the way).

well it has been proven that mushroom grown indoors contain more psilocybin then when grown in the wild due to the fact you can get it close to perfect invroment to grow

I've heard that one can remove pins early on to sorta force the mycelium to divert resources to the remaining pins. Anyone know anything about this?

It might just be me, but when I harvest if there are any pinheads developing they will abort, I try not to damage the surface, but it could be because of any damage that is done.

hmmmm so yeah mean that the will give all the nutrients to the other pins so they will grow bigger?

you misunderstood my point, I wasnt saying that air exchange would make some fruits big and others small, I was saying that without enough air exchance in general all your shrooms would be skinny, besides which gases do seperate into layers, which is why you need to fan, Co2 is heavier than O2 consequently in a terranium you will have more Co2 at the bottom thus requiring you to mix them up, granted they seperate horizontally not vertically but I just being padantic now

yea I do agree with you about the gases but you misunderstood me too I was saying that if you have the best invroment that you can give that mushrooms for PF tek and casing the casing will get bigger and more mushrooms and more flush due to the fact it has more/better nutrients, and yes some times on cakes you will get one or two big ass mushrooms and the rest will be really small if there is even other mushrooms besides the really big one or two that that is because the mycelium gives those mushrooms big ass mushrooms all the nutrients
