Recovering data from a formatted hard drive
    #3359762 -

I recently formatted the hard drive on a friends computer. The process only took a few seconds so I don't think that it defragged the information. Some files that were to have been kept ended up not being backed up. Is their a way to recover these?

download file recovery software. you'll want to take that drive and put it in another computer and recover it. If you reinstall the OS, you might risk writing over the data.

a "quick-format" simply erases the File Allocation Table or FAT. This table is basically a "phone book" listing for the locations of files on the disk platters. if only the FAT is removed the files stilll exist but the OS cannot know where to find them as it believes the areas of the disk they occupy to be empty.

here daussaulit is right. it is of primary importance that you do nothing else with the drive except use another computer to recover from it. any further use of the drive increases the chance that data will be written over the data you are wanting to keep.

BTW, the "long-format" actually magnetically realigns the cylinders on the disks thereby magnetically altering the entirety of the disk surface. the old data then exists only as a anomolous magnetic signature that takes very expensive methods to retrieve.

I've actually already re-installed the OS. Do you think it's impossible now?

I'm not sure if it is possible to tell until you actually run a scan with a data recovery program. I'm sure something is retrievable, but I have no idea how much would be. Whatever you do, don't move large amounts of data onto that disk, installing a data recovery software needs to be your top priority if you want to recover anything.

You should be able to recover some of the data.

Google programs that specialize in recovering data after a format.
There's alot of good ones out there. (Sorry I can't name any off hand)

If the program isn't free, go download it from various torrent sites.

The feds and other big brother corps use that kind of software/hardware? for busting people who are more cautious then your average joe. I'd like to have something similar but i don't, the only program i can recommend is "EasyRecovery.Professional.v6.04"

They say to securely delete your protected files you need to use a program like East Tec Eraser (or similar) something that overwrites and scrambles the file with random data 35 times or more...etc

I know of a friend who knew a person who said one particular website has 6 different apps to download and try out. his surname was similar to a dying dying star..like suprnova

I've heard of encase and fred for forensic programs. Might be a place to start.

I don't believe most data recovery centers use software for the tough cases. They take the platters out of the hard drive and use a oscilloscope sometimes.

I read a long article once that stated even after two or three formats data could sometimes be recovered.

I have an 80 gig NTFS partition drive that did not have an OS on it, during an installation of linux, the partitioning manager did not detect this drive ... is my problem similar to this? and is there any way to recover the data on this hard drive?
