Data salvaging from an SD card? ("corrupted")

Hi all...was hoping someone may be able to shed some light on this for me. I am currently road tripping around Vancouver Island...I bought a 2GB Secure Digital memory card for my digital camera for the occasion. 5 days, and many photos, into my trip, I was making a video of some salmon jumping right by the shoreline and when I finished making the short video clip, the screen said "memory card error".
Now, when I try to view my images on the camera, all of them simply display a question mark and a message saying "corrupted data". I took it to a computer store in a small town and they stuck it into an SD drive. All of the files are still there, except their filenames have been garbled into gibberish, and the photos are not viewable at all ("drawing failed").
Is there any chance of me salvaging all or some of my photos? What is involved in doing this? Can I do it myself or do I need to take it to some specialists? Any help would be very much appreciated.

I imagine that the first thing you would want to do, if you don't have one already, is to purchase a multi card reader or an SD card reader so you can access the SD card directly from your computer without going through your camera.
Then, there's a host of image recovery software available. Unfortunately, I don't have the experience to recommend any in particular, but I've attached a keygen for Digital PhotoRescue Pro 4.2 simply because it was easy to find and came from a reliable source. You could perhaps try that program.
Does anyone know if it's possible to take images of an SD card filesystem?
If it turns out to be possible, then taken an image of the SD card and write it to a new card, and attempt recovery from that to avoid damage to the original card and filesystem.
Taking the card to a specialist is certainly possible but probably quite expensive. I'm not at all sure about the process of professional data recovery from solid-state media, so I can't really comment. I would certainly recommend attemping to do so yourself first, especially if it only costs you a few dollars for a disk reader. However, you should bear in mind that consumer-level data recovery software can damage the filesystem it acts upon, and using data recovery software on your SD card, while it may be successful, might also jeapordise the ability of professionals to recover data from the card in the future. Use an image if at all possible.

Thanks a ton for that input. I'm still on the island but when I get back to Vancouver I will have to give that a shot. Will let you know if it works.
