So now what do my cyans need?
    #3360455 - 11/14/04 05:14 PM (12 years, 22 days ago)

OK so I posted a couple of weeks ago about using wild spawn for indoor cultivation. Every post said I needed to try to get a clean sample from agar. Well I didn't! I simply put the spawn on some sterilized cardboard. Now its about 1 week later and the cardboard is 3/4 of the way colonized(I used a lot of spawn). So now do i just add alder chips? or do I try to get it to fruit at this point? Any advice would be help full, considering I never grown shroom before.

dig out under a shady bush a hole in the size of your cardbord, bout 2 inches deep, put in a thin layer of chips, then the cardboard and cover with more chips until even...then cover with leaves and little twigs...that should work
btw. what are the temps in your area now?

BiO.

Thanks BiO, I enjoyed the info. I'm looking more so to grow them in my house. The temps out side are between 40's and 50's. I know that that is perfect temps because I have some wild cyan's growing in my yard right now, but its only about 10 or 15 sh-rooms. I would like to fruit them on my back porch where it isn't heated. So should I just build a humidity dome and place the spawned cardboard with wood chips under it? I've been told that cyan's. aren't a good strain to attempt to grow for the first time, but I live in the PNW and they grow all over up here so I figured WTF!!!!! :mushroom2:

I would use styrofoam containers. the type that are used for shipping fish or other fresh seafood I would use a 10:1 mix of hardwood chips and organic compost ie (black gold potting soil/compost)I would put your colonized cardboard about 2" below the surface then I would put a 1/2" layer of straight organic compost and I would plant grass seed on the surface. Leave em on your back porch in the shade. Poke some holes in the bottom of the container for drainage just in case U get an unexpected large amount of water in it. It will take about two weeks for the grass to grow. The grass will provide shade and humidity and will make the process of colonization and fruiting much more low maintenance IMHO. This TEK works.

cyans are not that difficult even for a newbi
let the card board fully colonize
when thats done lay the cardboard out on the bottom of a tray
cover with fresh alder chips 3 inches deep
spray top of chips with fine water mist and cover the whole thing
with plastic or put tray in plastic bag
incubate at 65 to 75 deg F takes about 3 to 5 weeks
when myc reaches the top of the chips drop temp by 10 deg, open the bag or remove plastic a couple times a day, and give em some light
no need to case if all goes well youll see fruits

Thanks for all the advice. This will be invaluable information. I was wondering about the incubation temps quoted by noxy, do cyan's not like to be incubated at the standard 82-84 deg.F? Because I was going to take a sample and grow it on agar, in a Tub in tub enclosure. I would hope that it wouldn't burn the myc. As far as fruiting is concerned I am building a Martha, However I'm modifying the system so that the PVC shelving will be supplied with cold water from a reservoir that has the coolant system from a small refrigerator, that has the thermostat switch rewired to be controlled by a digital thermostat placed in side of the Martha. Any way hopefully this will work!!! Thanks again!!!!!!!!! I'll post some pics as soon as I get my camera out of the repair shop!!! :mushroom2: :mushroom2:

cyans like 65-75 F for spawn run
50-60F for pinning / cropping

rh wants to be 90% plus during spawn and pinning
add some fresh air and light during pinning/cropping and drop the rh to
around 85% after pins have set
they like a slightly higher CO2 level than cubies

Once again thanks. I just did a test run in my Martha and I think I should be able to keep it in that range. I'm going to have to modify the shelving a little, because of condensation but that will be easy!!! Have you ever used the Karo tech with cyan's? I was considering it to create some more spawn, since i have so much space in my Martha. Do you know a good ppm range for Co2?

Thanks again!! I should give you a bump, but I can't because I dont have enough posts yet!!!!! I'm going to try the karo tomarrow so I'll let you know within the next week. Do you have a book about growth perameters, or do you just have alot of experance with cyan's? Anyway that ppm measurement should help some, I have an old meter from when I used to grow MJ so it will be nice to put it back to use!!!! Thanks again!!!!!! :headbanger: :hellfire:
