It is my experince that processed paper products do not support the fruiting of azures and cyans.

As workman said, the woodloving species do not like paper based products. The reason for this is the lack of any solid structure in the substrate, making it very difficult for the mycelium to grow over anything. Paper products do not allow enough airation. I do use cardboard in a limited way for spawn production for ps cyans. It only allows the growth due to the corrogations in the cardboard, and growth is relitively slow compared to alder shavings.

Why not just try it! Who knows, you could be pleasantly suprised. Or maybe the key is that it has to be SWEDISH toilet paper. Just kidding.

OK then I will try it. I have plenty of cyan spawn. But I am not too sure where to find "toilet paper", so I am going to have to shop around Would all of you like me to post the results in a week or so?

forgive me as i do not know much about this topic (woodlovers) so my comments may be way off, but isnt there a pic of mushrooms growing directly on a book (as in paper in one of Stamets' books? Is this due to books being a better substrate than toilet paper ( paper discrimination here ) or because this is totally different from P. cyans, etc.? Well, whatever, just curious. i always found that pic kinda cool. xys

DAN you may want to try some of the unbleached TP or paper rolls that ya can find at Co'ops etc. I may give it a try after I get more azure spawn.------------------ "Experence is not what happens to you it what you do with what happens to you" A. Huxley

I have some results to post: I have tried adding toilet paper to some of my cardboard spawn jars, but no growth has become apparent. I think this could be 2 different things 1. The toilet paper indeed has no airflow channels to support the heavy rhizomorphs of cyan mycelium, 2. The toilet paper is white, exactly the same color as the mycelium, so it could be there, but I cannot see it because it is simply hidden. The spawn jars with toilet paper are also taking on a rank smell, suggesting contamination. I will update my report later on this week.

Well I have an update: Cyan mycelium is willing to colonize toilet paper, but it (the toilet paper)lacks enough structure to allow for complete colonization. There are not enough air pockets. I dont know if cyans could be fruited from this, as I dont think they could even establish enough myelial networks to completely colonize the medium. Toilet paper is not worth the long colonization waits(as of right now only minimal has occured), and cardboard is definitely more liked by the fungus.
