PMP: Filtering air supply
    #3353060 - 11/12/04 05:51 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Hello guys,

My last post before I lay myself to rest!

Soon (I hope) my jars will be colonized and it is time for the PMP> Exept the Geolite everyhing is here now.

I am wondering though, how neceserry is it to filter the air which the airpump pumps into the PMP?

What are good ways of doing so, like a poor mans filter ?

The PMP is in my study room, dry and frequently visited by me, I am there now...

Thanks all, have a nice evening in USA. Here it  is beddy time 4 me.

Depends on how dirty the air in your house is... It certainly can't hurt.

The traditional way is to stuff a film canister with polyfill and use that.

I'm not entirely sure how you connect the tubes.. I always imagined that I would go to the hardware store and find some plastic 1/8" nipples to screw into each end of the canister w/ a little epoxy or other such glue.

You can also put the air pump into a small box stuffed with polyfill.. just make holes for the lines to run out. That's probably the easiest method.

I put mine into a vacuum cleaner bag, using weather stripping and polyfill to seal the area where the lines come out. I was going to use a HEPA bag, but I couldn't justify the cost.

The filter on any of my air pumps were a joke.A cheap fix polyfill covered by a coffee filter that is taped on to the pump.

Yeah diskman that pump in a box with polyfill setup does not sound bad at all...
I guess that idea passed yesterday as well, I was looking for some more comments on the matter.

But how dirty is my air here, I havent got a clue.

I just might go for that PIPB setup! (Pump In PolyFill Box)

Any other suggestions?

Now this addict is really goin out the last round with his dog and a homerolled tobacco sigaret!

Yes mister that is very good, my room where both incubator and pmp are is used frequently. I might move them to the 2nd floor, where only the cat lives.. :P

But I was not talking room cleaning/ventiltion but your actual fruiting chamber, the box where your mushrooms grow in.

what i wonder is if tyvek can "breath" like 200Liter an hour. the pump will suck "dirty" air inside anyway cause i dont think i can put the enevelope airtight around the pump? (But maybe it can be done i dont know tyvek)

I agree with you on that, tyvek will allow a release but not enough to handle a larger pump. Im using 5500s which would probably vacuum like hell.

I was talking yesterday about taking a flowback stopper that comes with most bubble wands. A small plastic 2 ended box that stops water from drawing back to the pump during a power outage, cutting it in half with an xacto knife, filling with polyfill then resealing with super glue and silicone. It would make a handy small and clean filter.

Yeah it seems like that. But I wonder if there are any other/better ways of filtering air.
I wonder if one does/should do that in the 1st place?
