Tyvek envelopes... for real?

So I've seen Tyvek (or other synths) filter disc things from myco suppy places... But you can just get envelopes from the post office (or office supply store) and cut them to size and use them? Same material, same efficiency? If I tell my local postman I want a couple of Tyvek envelopes, he'll know what I am toking about?
