IME this isn't the case at all. It seems about the same if you give it half the amount of grain as you do straw. Personally its easier for me to bring a bag of grain up my apartment then bails of straw or poo, easier to hide while in the apartment as well. Straws great and all..just no more in the apartment. Heres some rye pics:

This was a quarter pound exactly fresh:

The big one was 40 grams

The substrate was about 2 inches thick on the rye and 4-5 inches thick on the straw. Yeilds per flush were similar but rye lasted for 5 flushes yeilding well..first 3 were excellent. Straw putters out quicker. I cant vouche about when adding poo though..havn't tried that yet.

I dont think thats too bad of a price, i have also seen people getting it for much cheaper, but the stuff i get is certified organic so i guess it costs a little more. What they're saying is that pund for poung grain is a better substrate, for a cubensis at least.
