heating pad

I had a question on using a heating pad for incubation. What level should i set it on it only has low high and med?

I'd say low. But if you're serious about this hobby you should build a tub-in-a-tub and not use a heating pad. Use the search feature and you'll find plenty of information how to build one. (won't cost more than $25 bucks)

I have a tub ready to go its just I cant get aquarium heater right now so i put my jars in there.

I use a heating pad to incubate jars because a tub of water in my closet is not feasible. Set it on low, and make sure that it isn't in direct contact w/ any flamables just in case. The way mine is set up, the heating pad is set on a metal rack and my jars go on top of it (I store the jars in the box they came in). This way, there is ventilation and I know the jars aren't getting too hot. I've incubated many jars this way and it works fine. The difference between using a heating pad and not using one is tremendous, so its at least a viable option.

Heating pads are a fire hazard.If you got to use one put it on a timer.I had to use one before,works get.A heating pad was not designed as a 24/7 shroom heater.Be safe.

I've left those things on for weeks at a time. Doesn't seem to make it any less effective either.

That's not saying yours wont short out and cause a fire to turn your family into ash, though. watch out.

Yeah, thats a lie - a friend of mine just built a tub in tub and it was more than $25. Two Rubbermaid tubs 50gal. a piece, were $30 at wall mart. The 200W fish tank heater was $25 at a local pet store. I bought these very heavy duty type PVC caps that were about $3 a piece to keep the top tub from hitting the heater, and a tube of epoxy to hold these down was $5. My friends tub in tub is big enough to comfortably warm 48 pint size jars to 86 F. but the total was more than $25. It came out to $72 total, but like i said its pretty nice i think compared to others I've seen, and rather large. People always b.s. about prices on this forum thou, like everyone here is a super bargain hunter that gets these mad hookups. I bet you can get some mexican brand tubs that are like 10gal and , and a fish tank heater that is 50 watts and will break in a month - but that is the only way your getting a tub in tub for $25. If you want to know how much a nice martha is, its about $200 all in all.

I dont think any of that is true. just becuase you jump inot things and spend all your money before looking around for the good prices doesnt mean everyone else has to. you can get the rubbermaid tubs at everything a dollar at you guessed it a dollar. and i found a 250 watt tank heater at petco for 12.95 and it came with two suction cups and i bought some waterproof epoxy at the hardware store for 2 dollars and use it on the bottom of the suction cups and let it cure before adding h20. so all together it was around 18 dollars.

Someone who hasn't used a tub-in-a-tub before probably isn't experienced enough to need 48 pint-sized jars warmed. I was thinking he was going to need maybe 15-20 half-pints which could easily fit in a 10gal Rubbermaid. But a tub-in-a-tub can definitely be built for around $25-30.

Also for tub in tub.. I don't know what Walmart you're buying your 50 gal rubbermaids from, but I get mine for $8 there, and an aquarium heater is around $20, so lets say $36 - 45 for a tub in tub.

A very worthwhile investment.  (Get a pressure cooker first if you have to choose, heating pad will suffice until then.)

i would definitely use a tub however. on cost like $20 and i always have a constant temperature of 83 degrees.

i use a heating pad because i'm too cheap to pay for a tub-in-tub, though those things work super well.

the real concern with a heating pad is that you don't want direct contact with the jars, as this will dry out the substrate.

using a small rubbermaid/sterlite container will work wonders, just get one that's not opaque (so light doesn't get through). put a rack in it as suggested, and put the heating pad under the rubbermaid. put a towel between the rubbermaid and heating pad to spread the heat out, it really does work. get a thermometer and put it on the rack where the jars are, that's the temperature you're concerned with. you're going to have to fiddle with it to get it going just right. start on low and see what temperatures you get. then medium. shoot for mid 80's, but not over 84-86. if it's too cold on low and too hot on medium, try a clean blanket over the top.

the real point is, try out the incubator first to get it into that sweet spot. be sterile. don't check your jars too much.

Here heating pads are much more expensive then an auqarium heater and extra tub 2gether so the choice was easy: Tub n Tub ! :laugh: :thumbup:
