Heating Pad
    #4324631 - 06/22/05 01:56 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

What does anyone recommend for a heating pad? Any particular brands or styles? I will be using it for incubation.

I can tell you a heating pad is a pain in the azz. Constantly checking to make sure it has not started a fire, constantly turning it off and on. Do what I did spend a couple extra bucs and buy do the double tub tek with the aquarium heater, it really works great and its always at a constant temp. with the heating pad it goes up and down.

Buy a reptile heating pad... place 3 layers of towel over it, put incubation chamber on top. I use a styrofoam cooler for incubation with this method and my temps stay between 84 and 86 constantly. My room temp is inbetween 74-77.

Yeah, heating pads are hard to use, they heat locally. The reptile or seedling are basically the same as a water bed heater, these work good, and thewy're made to run continuously.

i have a crappy ass heating pad that ive used for abour 2 years... i got it from kmart for like $5. has high/medium/low settings... now it IS a fire hazard, but it keep it in a rubbermaid (the big ones), and put a baking rack/sheet thing over it so the jars arent directly touching the heating pad... and put a shirt over the baking/rack sheet... then i turn it on a low level 1, and put some foil over the jars to keep in the heat.. it usually stays at ~85... but i remember the first 2 weeks i went without a lot of sleep, hoping i wouldnt end up in flames....
just fyi, im purchasing an aquarium heater pump thingy next week so i dont have to use it anymore... to big of a risk, imho.

That shit goes up to 124 degrees. I have never had problems though, a few layers of towels or clothes or something will do fine. The temps in my terrerium range 83-86 degrees. I use a heating pad (with a layer of perlite in the incubator).

I tried using a aquarium heater in the double tub and it didnt work to well + it was expensive. I have been useing a heating pad on low under my double tub and it works just fine + it was inexpensive.

Almost all heating pads have a on/off setting & low / medium /high setting.

Any one of which may not suffice to maintain the temp - you want. You can often find a Dial-A-Temp switch at pet stores that are intended for reptile pads. They cost about $15. The range is from zero to whatever is the maximum wattage of the pad.

You simply plug one in a wall socket, then plug the pad into it. Set the pad on high, then use the dial to adjust it - to where you want.

I just bought 2 underwater aquarium heaters for 20 bucks on ebay. I bought them on Monday and they were delivered to my house by the following Friday. One is 150 watts and the other is 250 watts. The one in my 125 gallon aquarium is 150 watts and it keeps my tank at a constant 83 degrees.
I hope this helps ya,
