Heating pad and Incubador- PLZ HELP
    #1802024 - 08/11/03 04:20 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Now I know heating pads aren't supposed to be good beccause they dry out the cakes, but, what if I were to put the heating pad in my incubador and put the jars on a tray, not directly on the pad, would this be o.k. ??

Hey Man - kinda new myself and I've switched to an aquarium heater method myself, but when I was using a heating pad I did it like this with pretty good results:

Put your jars in a tupperware container, not too tall. Lay your heating pad on a flat surface and start on low. put 2 - 3 layers of towels over your heating pad and then sit the container with the jars on top. Get yourself a digital thermometer with memory (9$ US at Wal Mart) and put it in the container to moniter temp. Now cover the container with the lid, or blankets, keep it in the dark and check your temp in a day or two. Anywhere between 80 - 86 F should do fine.
Too cool - take away a layer of towels. Too hot , add a layer.

I have a heating pad and I have it under my incubator and I have a sheet(towel or blanket can also be used) wrapped around it so it will keep the temp down.

it keep the temp at 86F

.. Incubator  :shake:

Heating pads don't only dry out your jars, they also provide an unstable temp, just go with a heater/rubbermaid incubator setup.

there is a way to make this work.
i clone wild flowers quite often, and to maintain a humid enviornment i use a pf style fruiting chamber, heated to a constant, stable temp.
the design is a fishtank with a piece of plexiglass over the top. and the heating pad right side up on top. my heating pad has only one setting and that is high and runs at 115 F. when its on top it only radiates a small amount below.

stacking towels ontop of a heating pad will also work but is a giant fucking fire hazard, i would not recomend this to anyone!

Thanks for the help, I got my aquarium heater working now, but I'll leave the pad around just in case.

incubator. easier and cheaper i think than even buying a heating pad.

stack 2 rubbermaid containers one inside the other and fill the space between them with water, H2O2, and a fish tank heater. set the temp at 84 degrees, place your jars in, cap off the top rbbermaid there and dont worry again for 2 more weeks

oh yeah and plug the heater in too

lol

heating pad $25+

on the other hand

fishtank heat $30+ for a good one
and don't for get the other contain you need $5-$10 and then you have to drill a hole to put the heater in and now you have to deal with water leaks ect.. and you have to buy extra H202 $3-5 for the water and always have to check to see how the water level is

I have used both. And only one, the aquarium heater, has ever ruined jars. I had an aquarium heater that basically boiled all the water it sat in, and shot the temperatures up to over 100 degrees F, and baked all the jars in the incubator. A very good aquarium heater, with accurate temp control, is expensive.

On the other had, I have used heating pads with much success for a over a year. I have them all on a timer, running on and off at the lowest setting every 2 hours. The jars are placed on a rack, spaced about 4 inches above the heating pad. No contact between the pad and the jars. Temps tend to fluctuate between 80 and 88 degrees F. This variance is acceptable for incubation and certainly mimics natural temperature changes in the outdoors.

Never had a problem with a heating pad. Sure both methods work if done right. HEating pad is just what I chose.

Synop3, you simply had your heater set to high or the wrong kind of heater because i have heard that it works.

all the problems you stated in the above post (temps 100+, baked all the jars, boiled water) are all a direct reaction to one factor...

The heater was set too high, resulting in high temps and everything else you said.

So, you just fucked up home boy

hmm well i only paid $12.99 for my heater and when i set it to 82 degrees it says 82 on the external thermometer. and when i started i bought like 6 or 7 tubs from k-mart on sale one day for like $3 apiece. just run the power cord between the 2 tubs you dont need to drill at all, the cord is long enough. i use H2O2 as a precaution, you can get that at a dollar store and even if youre cheaper than that just replace the water every week or so. im just saying what ive used to colonize half pint jars in 10-14 days depending on strain and substrate, and quart jars of rye grain in around 12 days as well.

whatever works for you man!!! i read these boards for about 4 months before i attempted cultivation and tried various incubation teks. i learned this one from Anno, he used it very successfully and when i tried it i have success as well. but theres more than one way to skin a cat if u know what i mean  :mushroom2:
