Yo, I want to train my dog to sniff out Psilocybe. Anybody in this mutha practice this?

I have a Westie and I won't let his mouth anywhere NEAR actice or poisonous mushrooms.
I think the outcome could be devistating!

I've heard that pigs are trained for mushroom hunting in Europe. So maybe I need a pig...I've always wanted one.

You could train a dog to find mushrooms. Family friends of mine own a place called 'Big Basin Dog Training Camp' and they make a game out of it.
They give them a scent, and the dog wil try to find it.
Though, usally searching in a controlled area, like Car, room, bushes - but I have no doubt you could teach a dog to find mushrooms.

Nice.
I wondered about using my yellow lab to hunt shrooms. Unfortunately, I figure that truffle hunters wouldn't be using pigs if dogs could do the job.

Pigs can sniff out truffles because they love them.
Normal shrooms smell like the earth and most dogs cats do not like them.
On the other hand, many animals love shrooms, especially Amanita. Deer and squirrels love to munch and play on Amanitas.
Slugs , snails, rats, cockroached (Palmettos, the large water bug tyopee) all love Psilocybe cyubensis in their drying stages.
So do the larvae and the ants. I posted a pictorial here and elsewhere on the shit, the flies, the worms and the ants.

There was a news article I read a while back that claimed a mans dog had went into his cow pasture and eaten some psilocybes. He had to shoot it after it wouldnt stop attacking him.

That's so pfunny, the exact thought has occured to me on several occasions. I could train the dog to sniff em' out while I burned one on the grass... However, my dog Kalackala ate some chewy Amanita Muscaria caps right off the barbeque one time. Man, what a pathetic lump of fur she was for 12 hours. Drooling all over herself and the pillow I propped up her head on.  I had to stay up at her side, completely worried for her life, after she ralphed all over in my back seat and crashed. I was mostly scared because I would shake her and she wouldn't move. And I was trippin', so I thought her chest wasn't moving either... I envisioned the newspaper headlines in my state. Now, she wants nothing to do with the scent of shrooms, so training would be a bit dicey.

I have to check my backyard when I let my dobie out. She goes right under this Almond tree in the corner that gets these big white common lawn mushrooms under it, and she loves to chomp them down.
I freaked out of course the first time, called my vet, he said to watch her and if she started to act weird or vomit to bring her in.
Nothing happened, lucky her, she ate a good pound or two of em.
Since I have noticed this I now scout my little backyard before letting her have at it.
My grandmother used to tell me dogs would eat mushrooms to help their tummies -- but only dogs could eat them and I would die if I tried. Dunno if any valid points behind this but they know Grizzly bears and Brown bears GO TO TOWN on psyilocibin containing mushrooms.
When I think about bringing a dog with you while your trying to hunt for shrooms I think of problems that might happen. Unless your dog is actually hunting down shrooms then seems like it would be more of a responsibilty, more attention drawn to you, etc.
Then again you can just say your out walking your dog as a cover also.
