Ps. ovoideocystidiata found!!!!!! PICS!
    #1610301 -

!!!            Extra Special Thanks to Shamus Richmond III for this invaluable information    !!!!!

Suspected Ps. Caerulipes found in West Virginia (as specific as it gets).  May 1, 2003.  These mushrooms are well known to local young adults.  They are found  in deciduous forests near river valleys.  This bit of information is important.  These grow most prolifically in disturbed soils (i.e. flood plains, overflow areas). Found growing directly on decayed wood debris (most commonly on Maple and Birch species) covered by 1/4 inch of humus/soil/debris very near grasses (as you can see in the pics).  Also sometimes found growing through moss on the forest floor.

According to my Audubon Identification guide the following pararmeters for Caerulipes match with these specimens:
Size: (small)
Spore Color: Black/Purple
Habitat: Near rivers in deciduous forest
Range: West Virginia, USA

But the season pararmeter does not. Audubon says August - October, yet these specimens were found May 1.  MJShroomer has said that June is the season for Caerulipes, so there seems to be some debate about Season.

A great photo of habitat.

Spores have been collected and are awaiting further analysis.  I do not currently have any extra spore samples to give away, so please dont ask.  As far as cultivation teks, my intuition tells me that a Ps. Azurescens tek would be quite successful for this species as well.

As far as psychoactivity is concerned:

These are about the same potency as Ps. Cubensis by dried weight.  When eaten fresh, these mushrooms are allegedly considerably more potent.  The experience is high quality, shamanic, most closely relating to the Pan Cyan or Liberty Cap Experience.

Anymore questions, please ask!

Lets all thank Shamus Richmond III for these wonderful pictures and information!!!  He and I hope that it will help hunters/culitvators in the future!

Yes those are definately Psilocybe caerulipes.

Congradulations, two collections in five years posted here at the shroomery.

mj

As for season, May through August wouyd be about right. They are a summer mushroom along the east coast. Other refeerences ay they are as far south as Florida, but still are extremely rare. THis is becasue they are a wild shroom, buit have been collected in Ohio and Michigan in many publis areas such as parks and well mulched garden bed-boxes. However I believe they do not occur during the extreme hot months.

By the way, Gary Lincoff is a friend of mine and he did tell me years ago when he did the Audubon field guide that he has bnever seen a P. caerulipes. The picture in his book was from the New york Botanical Gardens collection of Photographs.

Gary also edited the Simon and Schulster Mushroom Field Guide but the Publishers at Simon and Shulster would not let Gary put any PSilocybe mushroom sections or photos int hat guide. They are an anti-drug pubishing firma nd thought that putting that informationin their field guide would lead to illicit drug use and traficking.

Thats funny that there has been much talk about this mushroom, if it even existed, or if anyone could find it...

That is great man, thankyou so much for the pictures and beautiful discription.

Next batch, bring them home and put them on your scanner and scan some images. I do with blue ringers every now and then and even with cubes. The scanner is a good camera fro when yo do not have one.

I have even gone to kinkos copy shop and laid shrooms ontheir scanner. no problem.

great man, i was hoping to beat anyone to finding one but looks like that 100$ did it for you. i am proud of you nevertheless

i have a florida spot with decidious forest and a stream about 5 minutes from my house, and it rained last night considerably. still not the rain we need but not bad. and then there is a park next to Brooker Creek. perhaps....

also , in stamet's book, the description calls the mushroom brown and fading to ochreanous light brown. why is this and does P. careulipes exhibit this variation in color normally or is it just because it is hydrophanous?

I think his color is off becasue of the quality of the photograph.

The bluing images look more like the photos I have in my library.

mjshroomer

The caps also can dry toi a straw-yellow color like cubeis and P. cyanescens.

as seen in this photo of P. caerulipes

If you notice soem of the caps also have the egg eye look in their center.

Nice work, better pics would be wondeful, but these are better than nothing!!!

I know that most psilocybes share similar characteristics and can appear very similar, but man do some of those look exactly like Ps. weilii! Which would still be an exciting find that far north.

Likely they are not weilii though, and they are the real deal caerulipes, which brings up another thing. I think, I am almost positive, I found caerulipes last year. I have found 1 patch of mushrooms I thought were weilii but were kinda different and had a different smell about them, yet similar too. The thing that suprised me was my location. I was out in the country about 2hrs outside ATL riding my 4 wheeler on public WMA land where I sometimes deer hunt. I spotted a cluster of 6 mushrooms on the bank of a small creek in the middle of the woods, no disturbed land for 50 miles or more, it was deep country. This was a completely natural setting. I either found wild weilii in their natural habitat, or they were caerulipes.

If the books are right, this species is rare but once found a patch is known to fruit for a long time, they should be back again this year and if so I will get pics and send them to someone to put under a microscope and compare to weilii to see if they are the same species or not.

This post and those pics defintiely got me thinking, I really need to make sure every weilii I find is indeed weilii, cause those caerulipes could pass as a weilii in my book.

just kidding, sort of. WORD.
and, as a final quip, i reckon i'll have to invest some time looking for this mushroom if the prints are worth a hundred bucks i MUST get some to fruit...then i can just live off the prints for a while.....

Sorry to nag you, but can you specify a little more on habitat. Were the pics above on a flood plain that is disturbed becasue it is cut back by the city every other year or so(this is typically the case, laws say a flood plain must be kept clear and open) Or is it a natural flood plain, like just a low area along a river that frequently floods and is diturbed by the flooding waters? What other kind of disturbed habitats have they been found in? We are talking about man made disturbence(sp?) correct, or are we talking about landslides, floods etc...? And how frequently are they found and in what numbers. Do they seem to be widespread across WV or are they kinda local to an area? I'm not asking you to get specific(please don't) just trying to get a good idea of just how uncommon these mushrooms are.

And would you ever consider taking an out of stater on a picking expedition  I'm in GA, so its not like I could rip off your patch, but I'd love to get some better pics, spore prints, and specimens if possible. I have family in WV and would love to come see these things in person this summer, if for anything just to get an ass loads of pics for the library. Hell, I'd pay to see these in person!

WEll someone saying they would pay a hundred and actualy paying it is another thing. http://www.petfungus offers phony sporeprints of P. samuiensis which he claimed came form eastern oregon. HE wants 160.00 a print for those. Trouble is is that they are not P. samuinesis and hsi story is shit.

He says a thai farmer brought his horses to america and that is where the shrooms came from. They grow in manured soil of water buffalo on Koh samui island inthe gulf of Thailand. Ther area no horses ont he island.

And besides it would be cheaper to buy a horse in ORegon or Washingotn than to bring it to America on a ship.

When I was first made aware of the sight he was offering the prints for $60.00. A fter i told him I was selling the first 25 for $5.00 and then ten for each one after that, he raised the price to 160.00.

His photograph posted at his sight of the samuineis looks like a liberty cap and is taller thant he three inch height of samuinsis.

I doubt if anyone would pay that much for a print.

mj

However, I know if I lived ont he east ocoast between Michigan and Florida I would have found that mushroom by7 now.

It is there.

Most likely Lizard King, those are the very mushrooms involved in this case from West Virginia.

I have been in constant contact with the reporter of this articl and he is keeping me informed of the status of the case.

They have analysed the shrooms each individual had in their possession since the bust and they were all found to contain Psilocine/psilocybin and they are going ahead to prsecute the people involved.

Below is the article.

mj

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

ILLEGAL MUSHROOM PICKING LEADS TO ARRESTS Approximately 50 people have been arrested in connection with picking of psilocybin mushrooms near Castleman's Run Road in Brooke County near Bethany. Brooke County Sheriff Bernie Kazienko confirmed Tuesday the arrests have been made since May 1, and 30 more people face charges of picking the psilocybin mushroom. Kazienko explained that the psilocybin mushroom, when ingested, produces a mild hallucinogenic effect or "buzz." Psilocybin mushrooms are classified as a controlled substance under the West Virginia Controlled Substance Act. "This is an annual event during the mushroom season, which is May through September," Kazienko explained. "The last couple of years, we've been watching the area, and watching which mushrooms have been picked." He said that while the arrests have been made during the initial investigation, many suspects also were charged with possession of marijuana either on their person or in vehicles. Some individuals attempted to escape the area and were charged with fleeing from police. "We've actually come in contact with approximately 100 people, and other charges are pending on close to a total of 80 individuals," Kazienko said. "There are also juveniles involved." He said the property is owned by Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. and that the steel company has been cooperative. He also said he met with an environmentalist and an attorney from Wheeling-Pitt, which owns 160 acres in the area. "We took them to the scene," Kazienko said, adding that since the meeting, Wheeling-Pitt has contacted the West Virginia University Extension Office and the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources. "They wanted to see what they could do to eradicate the mushrooms," Kazienko said. He said there are other options, such as using a bulldozer to clear the area. "There will be costs for Wheeling-Pitt associated with that," Kazienko said. Wheeling-Pitt has since hired security personnel to patrol the area. Bethany College security also is involved in the patrolling. "We're going to have people indicted by the grand jury on June 3 in connection with the mushroom incidents," Kazienko said. "Some have been arrested for possession with intent to deliver the mushrooms and others for possession with intent to deliver marijuana." Brooke County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Seminsky also has been working on the investigation and confirmed more warrants will be issued. He said some plain clothes officers also have been on patrol. "We're learning this has been going on for several years," Seminsky said. "We've found people out there from the break of day to late evenings, just after dark." Seminsky said, explaining that none of those arrested had to be transported to the Brooke County Jail in Wellsburg, but were processed at the scene. "Our biggest concern is the safety of the individuals," Seminsky added. "We don't want them ODing on the mushroom or taking the wrong mushroom and dying." Charges were were logged against people from Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. A person arrested for simple possession faces a misdemeanor charge and the penalties can include 90 days to six months in jail, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. Persons also may be placed on probation for six months. Persons found in possession of the mushrooms with intent to deliver or sell face a felony charge and that carries a prison term of one to five years, a fine of up to $15,000, or both. In addition, any property connected to the incident may be seized, pending forfeiture through the court system.

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSs
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

At my sugggestion, the reported went to the location but by then there were no mushrooms he coould take photographs of. He was also told to leave the property or they would call the Sheriff on him.

It's about time someone found these things. It would be interesting to see more pics of these during earlier stages of growth. I wonder if they're this white when they're young. Most psilocybe species change color from age and/or drying out.
I'm going to post some pics later of what looks like a similiar species that I found last fall. Everyone take a look and compare what I found to these.

Great photos, especially of the bluing ones.
Eventually, the mystery of the elusive bluefoot will be solved, and we'll find out that the little buggers were right under our noses ( or feet)  the whole time.

Sorry to nag you, but can you specify a little more on habitat.

Not a problem, LK. These mushrooms were found in a 100% natural setting. Any disturbance to the substrate would've been cause by running water. The mushrooms are very common in West Virginia during fruiting season. They are well known and sought after. They are called 'blue-foots' by most familiar with them. Also, these mushrooms seem to like habitats which are near elevation change. I'm saying they should be very common in the Appalachian foothills or any other hilly area in the specified range.

Also, these seem to be less common in the flatter areas of the specified range. It seems that a combination of steep hills and running water is what this species loves. The more hilly the area, the more common they are (in nature), at least to my observations.

I wanted to mention that Gary Lincoff used the name blue foot with no informatrion from anyone that that name was the nick-name for this species . He also refered to Psilocybe stuntzii as Stuntz's blue legs.'

I would like to point out that when i asked Gary where these neick names came from he told me that he made them up for lack of anything better.

Here is a quote from Audubon's Filed Guide on page 725 regarding comments about P. stuntzii.

Quote:
"Also known as Washington Blue Veil." Like some other blue legs, this does not blue conspicuously. To avoid confusing it with the Deadly Galerina (Galerina autumnalis), be sure to take a sproe print."
Quote:
Nopw where did Gary get get the nick-name " Washington Blue Veil" from?

He got it from Dr. Andrew Weil's article on Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest orginally published in the Botanical Museum Leaflets of Harvard University and later in Weil's aticle on mushrooms from Oregon published first in the Journal of Psychedeli Drugs which later appeared in The marriage of the Sun and the Moon.

However, during the past 25 years, this author and others have never heard a single person outside of these two authors use those epithets to describe either P. caerulipes or P. stuntzii, The P. stuntzii's and P. fimetaria are most commly referred to as 'blue ringers' nothing more nothing less.

So I find it surprising that you mention that local users in West Virginia call these musrhooms 'blue foots'.

The reporter from the Wheeler West Virginia Newspaper investigating this matter also said that he had talked this morning with 6 of the charged students about the name blue legs and they reported the only name they new was magic musrhooms.

I've talked to Shamus a bit more. Here are some updates/corrections.

This mushroom is found not only in the forest, but also in fields of tall grass/shade (more often/prolific in the forest) ALWAYS found growing DIRECTLY off of wood, usually ROTTED-To-Hell (Consistency of a sponge). Has been found fruiting directly off twigs laying on the forest floor. I think the 'wood-based matrix' discussed in GGMM is crucial. (Prefers Beech and Maple, but adaptable) ALWAYS found in an area with LOTS! of water. And it definently seems to be more common in the 'hills'.

One more important piece of info. The area where these were found goes into DEEP-FREEZE every winter, where the temperature does not get above freezing for over 2+ months at a time. It usually gets above freezing around mid-March. And yet these mushrooms are fruiting by april 20. So they seem to have a short life-cycle compared to the PNW woodlovers. Their lifecycle can't be any longer than 2 months it seems, unless mushroom mycelium can survive deep-freeze. Or maybe the wood-matrix substrate goes very deep into the earth where the mycelium can colonize and lay dormant in a just-above-freezing state. (as you know, the earth doesnt freeze once you get to a certain depth) Any guesses?

If the mycelium does indeed DIE every winter, than this could be an 'easy' active woodlover to cultivate outdoors (compared to Azure/Cyans, which take months, usually over a year before they fruit), considering the short life span. Shamus and friends say that these little guys want to reproduce badly, since they can be found in a variety of conditions. (temperature/season is always the same, but not habitat, although ALWAYS found growing directly off decayed wood)

Can anyone confirm/deny that ANY SPECIE of mycelium can survive deep freeze?

They do resemble some specimens of subaeruginosa.

Keep looking! If the conditions get right, even in the summer, these mushies may still fruit. Check areas where these may be protected from the heat and sun. Microclimates can produce mushrooms, while the surrounding areas may be devoid of them. If they are near a water source, that may be enough to keep the temp down and the humidity up.

Hi all!!
I live in Bethany WVa. where the good stuff grows, and I just so happen to live where they grow along the Buffalo creek, so I can hunt without being bothered or busted....and I am experienced in the hunt around here, so if you have any questions feel free to ask ...I am hoping that the major flood we had from IVAN doesn't hinder the shroom growing next year.  :crazy2:

Actually, it wasn't Wheeling it was Bethany WV a small college town, where the 80 or so people got busted for  trespassing  & I was very lucky I wasn't one of 'em! I won't go there anymore!

And yes, Sheik they grow like mad out there....The first time I went I couldn't believe these things were in such abundance in my own territory!! I'd get a shitload of 'em if I got there early, before anyone else, and I always did.
But I'm lucky enough to have them right here on the property that I live on & don't hafta worry about getting busted, since that area is being watched. :stoned:

I have been in contact witht he news reported who wrote hthis article. He attempted to get information form the DA, Sheriff Bernie K, and the DEA and they all would not give him any info. HE went to thwe place were they were picking mushrooms to takle pictures and could not find any mushrooms where they said the arrests occurred.

I have letters to and from Anderson and also wrote tot he sheriff who retired last year and is thinking of running for public office. WEent to the sheriffs website and they are so poor they did not have an email for him. Only a city address for the Sherriffs office.

The mushrooms were P. caerulipes

*bumpsie*

Just wanted to let you know that these guys are out there! I'll try to get some new pics with my new digicam.

I'll give you a lil more of a hint:

Found most prolifically in areas that look like this (sorry for crude ASCII ART)

forest montain(hill) on each side, with river valley (also forested) down below between the two forested hills. These forested hills slow evaporation of water (especially in the forested valley below), thus helping to keep RH high. Look for a place that gets flooded once a decade or more. (too much flooding washes away the mycelium) The ideal place will have lots of old (rotted) and new (fresh-er) lignous (wood) material on the ground, and rich, dark soil, with small undergrowth and grasses. Look in these grasses and undergrowth (similar to lib caps from my understanding). hardly any direct light will hit the ideal places, only diffused light.

These plains get flooded not too often, the weak/young/small stuff gets knocked over, but the established forest trees will survive this flooding, thus creating a nice balance of old and new.

They come up on 4/20 no joke, and last into mid-june. (hot weather = no good) Cool weather, with high RH (foggy days are nice)

They will be most prolific near the river/creek/stream ( within 1/4 mile or less)

________u should be looking__________
--------\in the valley be-.../---------|
---------\low the hills b...../----------|
----------\y the water...../-----------|
-----------\_____*_____/------------|

Some day I'll have a real drawing done, but you get the idea.

Sorry for the tweaked post, I'm extremely deprived of sleep currently.

Yeah, and if you live on a plain (no elevation changes) the chance of finding in its natural habitat is slim. (or any habitat really)

Dudes, I swear. Look down by the river in the grasses that grow on the forest floor. You need to look in appalachia-style landscapes. The river should naturally be at the lowest point between these hills/mountains. Look at my pics, study them.

I dont think I can be any more descriptive than this. Not that its an easy read or anything, I'm just the worlds worst teacher. If you can't find them after studying this post, then perhaps its time for a new hobby, bruv.

BTW I collected that bounty. Say what you want about him, he kept his word.

Isn't there some rules about specific locations not to be posted?

I don't feel comfortable with 'small little college town' and 'small little creek' being included in this piece of reference material. (The posts by IcanPickEmInWVa) Believe me, this is very descriptive. Of course, this is up to the discretion of the moderators.

Anyone who would go picking at the small little creek in the small little college town is asking to get their ass thrown in jail.

P. caerulipes can be forund from Mid June through August in amand made environments in woodchips in public gardens. Very rare in wild and very rare when found in wild meaning small collections of an ouonce or two. Not abundant unless inman made environments.

Almost 7 years old but it was really one of our first real glimpses at Ps. caerulipes. Turns out to be a VERY tough species to find. I thought I found them but it turned out to be Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata.

Good thread to keep around for reference. I'm surprised the pics still work!

Edit: I kinda wonder if these were ovoids. They grow in the exact same habitat as ovoids.

Quote:
They are found in deciduous forests near river valleys. This bit of information is important. These grow most prolifically in disturbed soils (i.e. flood plains, overflow areas). Found growing directly on decayed wood debris (most commonly on Maple and Birch species) covered by 1/4 inch of humus/soil/debris very near grasses (as you can see in the pics).
