Casing Question from a newb

This is my First grow if you don't want newbie questions get out now.

I was just wondering what the best way everyone has found to case. (i.e. higher yields, more flushes, bigger fruits)

yes i know i will get many different responses but that's okay i like variety.

My set up i have 12 cakes colonizing about 1 week apart at 3 jars ( 1 pint) a piece so like 3 jars (week 1) 6(jars week 2)3 jars (week 3) i did this to have continual growth in my chamber. also 4 of the jars are corn based and the other 8 are vermiculite and BRF. The strains are 3 Golden Teacher, 3 Puerto Rican, 2 Allen, 4 Brazilian.Does this matter in casing style?
My "terrarium" is a 25 gallon Rubbermaid container with a whole cut in the top and a piece of lexan sealed in its place. A large grow light will be used for light and applied about 10 hours a day. I don't have a mister or any air flow so i will be fanning and spraying around 2-3 a day until pins appear then ill cut it back.

I was just wondering how the best way to case this will be.

i was thinking just vermiculite, but i was wondering if this would give any higher yields than just cakes. i also heard something about jiffy being used what's this about?

i also had one more question if i am casing should i dunk before casing it of just case it?

I did the 50/50 (with oyster shell) and my casings are infested with pins

I'd say for a newb, just grow the cakes as they are. Casings sometimes getting the water content right is tough. It's best to grow your cakes and learn the mushrooms cycle first. Good luck and happy shrooming.

okay thanks i was thinking of doing cakes but looking at the yeild differences it is crazy. so i thought id try casing right off.

no way, i error9 is sending you on an error, lol.

Casing is the way to go. http://www.shroomwizard.com/growguide.html that is the complete way to go....

I have done both Teks even for a newb it's EZ as hell to case.

real simple...
after your cakes are 100% colonized, take 50% vermiculite and 50% plain dirt. I use 6 cups each per 2 cakes in one tupperware. mix the verm and dirt dry, then add 3 cups of clean water. then crumble the cakes into small pieces like marbles, then 6 more cups of dirt mix with 3/4 cup of water.
So now you have 3 layer sandwich, your 50/50 layer on bottom, crubled cakes in the middle, plan dirt on the top.
Let it sit in the dark for 7 days, sealed. open it up, keep the top off and spray 10 - 12 mists of water 1 or 2 times a day. or just once a day and keep the top on 50% of the time. I have even left the top on for 2 weeks and fanned it once a day and misting once a week.
you will get 5x more shrooms with this than just cakes.
This is by far the easiest, cheapest method out there.

My first go and I'm infested with pins so far. 50/50 with oyster shell. Go for it. Follow the directions and it will be an aberration if you fail.

Casing is easy and its tough to get the water content wrong on it, spray it until it glistens.

Verm and dirt is a poor casing mix choice though. Coco coir and verm (2 parts coir, 1 part verm, or 50/50) is a much better mix. Peat moss and verm is a better mix too but I prefer coir over peat moss.

thanks where can i get coco coir localy or do i have to order it online

also what size containers should i use for casing or should i just use the bottom or the rubbermaid

Its got other names. Bed A Beast and Eco Earth are popular brands. It's called coco coir. It comes in a smallish hard brick compressed in layers (to break it you must break it in layers) and will be in the reptile bedding section (what its used for) and will have directions saying something about adding 3 liters of warm water to the brick and it expanding to 8-9 liters. Brownish.

what size container shoul i use to case and how many cakes should i put in it or shoul i just use the bottom of the rubbermaid container

Put them in some small rubbermaid or tin foil containers. Make the substrate 1-1 1/2 inches thick, use as many cakes as needed.

also can i use pelite under the casing in my rubbermaid to keep humidity up or should i just spray and is 10 hours of light enough perday

Perilite in the bottom, I'd throw an (optional) air pump under there (look up poor mans pod, PMP) for automated fresh air exchange and a little extra humidity and I would still spray the casings either way. Spray directly until you see myc poking up then mist lightly over the casing and let it fall on. Water's important but be gental :smile: Good luck!
