first time casing questions...
    #561119 - 02/23/02 10:58 PM (21 years, 9 months ago)

ok. i have some aluminum cooking trays, vermiculite, and peat moss. where do i go from here. can i just use the "easy casing method", http://shroomery.org/findorgrowthem.php?View=docs&doc=39
and use a 50/50 mix instead of the straight vermiculite, or would it be straight vermiculite on the bottom and the 50/50 on top? also, someone had suggested using some crushed chalk in the mixture as well. how much of this is recommended and why? also, what is the importance of the crushed oyster shell in some of the other methods i have seen? thanks in advance for all the help. zodiac

You can use 50/50 mix instead of straight verm , foaf usualy places a layer of steril damp staight verm on the bottom . 50/50 on top with cruched oyster shells in the mix. Pretty sure the oyster shells provide calcium and help lower the r.h ., they also help provide a liitle more grip for the mushys so they dont fall over as easy when they get too large , either way the liitle guys seem to love it , it works quite well . You can find crushed oyster shell in the bird dept of pet stores or online ....goodluck..
