Casing Questions:
    #375187 - 08/20/01 03:21 PM (23 years, 1 month ago)

Hi - my second post here. I've discovered that casing is the way to go so i'm going to grow using that route, but i have a few questions still:

I read this in another thread:

"Perlite as a bottom layer works best. Rinse it and then let it dry up considerably before adding into tray. I would add the substrate directly on top of the perilte.

By using perlite, the mycelium won't colonize into it which is good. If it were to colonize into the bottom layer then it would render it ineffective in carying out its task efficiently. The perlite will wick the moisture that it soaks up from condensation run-off (from sides of trays) up into the substrate that is in direct contact with it.

This is much better than having the substrate sit in collected pools of water on the bottom surface of the container. "

So from that am I to understand that perlite is better than vermiculite as the bottom casing layer? Is there a big difference?

So far as gauging humidity i'll just be going by the amount of fog in my terrarium and by looks (or is a gauge better?) -- to keep an accurate temperate is there a method that should be implemented to heat the terrarium? Heatpad? heater? blankets? Light?

Using perlite for humidity an occasional misting might be needed -- i've heard a couple times that water with H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide right?) is good for misting...1 part in ten or something H2O2...that will kill bacteria i guess, and not harm the shrooms?

I think that's bout it for now...i'd love to chat with any casing experienced growers on AIM -- "Bigwelbyo" is the name!

Thanks a lot all you folks! this is a great resource and i think my first run of shroom will work out great with all the information i've received :)

You got it wrong man, perlite is on the bottom of the terrarium not the casing tray. Then in a tray layer the bottom layer (about 1 inch) with moist vermiculite. Then crumble the substrate on top of that with a layer of casing material or some people use vermiculite (again like 1 inch). The perlite at the bottom of the terrarium should be about 3/4 wet, then 1/4 dry on top of that. Look it up in the shroomery for casing it'll tell ya. Good luck on your shrooming ventures!
What you said is good for misting.
Another thing i don't know if it's a good idea posting your AIM name but it's up to you. I'm just a paranoid person like that.

that's what i thought about the perlite...but from reading what i quoted (i think McMan wrote it) it sounded like perlite is actually a better choice for the case bottom but that contradicted everything i've read...which is why i was confused

Perlite rules as a bottm layer. It act as a reservoir, aerates, is contam resistant, etceteras. Try it.

I agree with puscle.

perlite is always a bottom layer of my casings. a little perlite, a little water, and a drop or two of hydrogen peroxide (h2o2) :P I figure any water that might accumlate at the bottom and becomes stagnant it'll help kill off the contams as well as keep the casing moist for it's duration.

I might add, all you need is a quarter inch of perlite. Also, crunched up styrofoam packing peanuts work just as well.

thanks! :)

all i'm wondering now before i start is about temperature and humidity/air...i've heard that heated lizard rocks or whatever are good to keep temp up (i'll be using a big bin)...also from personal experience do y'all think it's better to just fan a terrarium or do some kind of air pump setup or something?
