 Kerry cheats at first debate?

What was it that Kerry took out of his pocket and placed on his podium? Some have suggested it was a 3x5 note card with crib points on it, or even a stack of such cards.
Others say it was a folded piece of paper. Still others say it was a blank piece of paper he could use to take notes on, despite the fact that paper and pens were provided for note taking. Several of the post-debate press reports mention Kerry looking down at his podium frequently, but I didn't see the debate so I don't know the significance of that observation.
Video clips of him removing whatever it was from his pocket are all over the net, as well as frame-by-frames and closeups. It wasn't a pen or a pair of reading glasses, it is quite clearly a white rectangular object.
In the stills it looks to me like a standard 3x5 note card, but maybe someone else would like to make a guess at it. Whatever it was, it was in clear violation of the debate rules.

could it be that he had some notes taken during
the debate that he wanted to keep?
(EDIT: I see now the supposed video is from before)
if people though kerry looked down at the podium
frequently, bush looked like he was reading from a
teleprompter embedded in the damn thing.

I'll see your mysterious white object and raise you a radio transmitter in Bush's ear. Both are pretty cock and bull, but if you are going to believe one, you should believe the other is at least rather likely. I'm not even going to bother to debunk all the bullshit in the post and don't expect you to refute the Bush/earpiece crap either, though you're more than welcome of course.
additional link that as of 8pm PST wasn't working due indy media's sql server being down at the moment. Should have an mp3 of that portion of the debate that supposedly lends credence to the accusation.

Note paper was provided as well as whatever pens they submitted for use beforehand. They were not required to use cheap ass shitty pens, they could use their own.
The clips don't show Kerry taking something from the podium and putting it into his pocket, but the reverse. He took it out of his pocket while his back was to the audience, then put it on his podium. This was not a question of him keeping souvenirs.
Cervantes -- if Bush had been caught doing this, would you be so dismissive? No -- it would be front page news in all the MSM for weeks.
Kerry took something from his pocket and placed it on the podium. This is a clear violation of the debate rules. I'd like the opinion of others here as to what they think it might have been. Sorry you find that bothersome.

Until you've actually SEEN the whole debate why don't you just hold your opinion on stuff like this? If you watch Kerry he hardly ever looks down at the podium except when he's actively taking notes. Whenever he's talking he's always making eye connection either with the camera, the moderator or he's glancing at Bush as he makes certain points.
I find it hilarious to watch the spin on this whole debate nonsense. First the pundits and fox news are telling us it's really important and that this is kerry's lost shot at staying in the race and if he doesn't shine he'll be out on his ass with no hope. Kerry then totally trounces Bush on almost all fronts and suddenly it's no big deal, the debates aren't that important blah blah. The freepers and their ilk scramble to defend Bush miserable performance. Now the lies and mudslinging start.*Yawn*

I'll take this chance to answer as well. It is quite likely it is just extra blank paper. If you watch the whole clip you can see that he does this supposed "cheating" in front of 4 cameras and turns around with the object in front of him, the moderator, the audience and even in Bush's field of vision. Only now days later as the RNC is scrambling for any excuse to explain Bush's loss are the lies coming out. Next thing we'll hear that somebody slipped Bush some spanish fly and that's why he was such a slack jawed retard.
Also I've not seen any quotes from the debate moderators, jim lehrer or anyone present. A splashy headline on the matt drudge's self-pleasuring web site does not a truthful story make.

They knew the questions would be about foreign policy but they did not get the questions in advance.
