Outdoor mushrooms won't pop up

Every time I try to grow an outdoor patch, the mushrooms will grow underground but will never pop up.  If I dig away the soil on top of the mycelium there will be half grown mushrooms down there.  Is 2 inches of dirt above the mycelium too much?  Or maybe they grow during the day, but at night when it drops to around 40 degrees they stop growing?  Anyone know? :confused:

Well when you case you put half the depth of the substrate on top so unless your throwing 4 inches of substrate that could be to much. I dont know much about outdoor beds though but this'll be a nice bump. Maybe instead of soil try something they like better like coir/verm or peat/verm or whatever you case indoors with. Maybe induce the myc to come to the surface to fruit.

outdoor patches grow slower than anything indoors, period.

that said, soil isn't the best material to put over it. try using some leftover coir.. that's what i used and i have new pins popping up every day. it's gotten cold here recently and they seem to like it for some reason... b+ does weird things.

you could also try using compost... i had a contaminated casing (biggest one i'd tried... sadly) and threw it in there... got my first pins off of that today. put it just below the surface, just raked a tiny, itty bitty bit of material over it and let it be.
