A friend and neighbor has a french drain in his yard (under the trench between the bed and the grass) so the ground stays quite moist.

There have been many flushes of all kinds of mushrooms, some as large as a head of lettuce and weighing over 6 pounds (none that stain blue though) in this strip of land (unfortunately, all that was there today were these ?cause the gardener was there yesterday and picked ?em all)

I have some jars that were contaminated with gray mold (and green mold in some too) so this a good test of how that "fat hoe Mother Nature" will take care of that for me:

So, I got to work on the large hole for the EQ?s:

Then made another (smaller) hole too for the Thai T3:

In 3 weeks, we should see some nice results.

That is what I'm thinking!! What difference is it gonna make if you toss your contaminated cakes outdoors to grow or you grow them indoors?? Either way you have a contaminated substrate, in which can lead to.........
I just dont get this save your contaminated cake bit.

The way I look at it, out in nature it's survival of the fittest, so if the mycelium is strong enough to take hold of the straw/dung it'll win out over the grey mold.
If the grey mold is stronger and it likes straw/dung as much as it does BRF, then it'll win and shrooms will never appear.
It's going to be one or the other, but not both. They obviously compete for the space in the jar, they don't mix, so there's no danger of the mycelium getting infused with mold and spreading it to the shrooms (IMHO).
If they grow, they'll be fine. But somehow I think that in this case the mold is gonna win and I'm gonna end up with a grey patch in my friend's yard, or nothing at all.

Well, I'd imagine molds and contaminations would weaken the mycelium, possibly making it colonize slower. TripMeister, are you using the bagged cow manure you buy from Walmart?
Oh yeah, and you haven't eaten any of the mushrooms yet, have you?
I believe its possible for contaminated mushrooms to sometimes grow large enough to eat. I've only heard stories of people eating 'bad shrooms', from what I hear it isn't too fun.

Nope. Horse poo. Brought to boiling with the straw then cooled.

Stories... Like ummm... Alice in Wonderland for instance?
Hey Moe!!!! How are the shrooms that grow outdoors from contaminated cakes? Any good?

So this theory is all based on an e-mail that the guy who wrote MMGG read once?
And it only applies to high doses causing an alergic reaction.
Gimme a break!
Moe eats 'em, I'll eat 'em! Either Mother Nature will take care of killing the contam's or the mushrooms won't "absorb" them, or I'll get really sick and be sorry I ate 'em. Believe me, I'll let you guys know how they are.

nonsense. different species don't inter-breed. stop using scare tactics to try to control others' actions. never bought into that 'absorbed contam' theory either. the mmgg is hardly a scientific document.

>never bought into that 'absorbed contam' theory either.
BUT.....
Well, I haven?t seen any evidence about this either up to date, and I never tried to eat contaminated fruits either.....
Let?s say the molds produce toxins which are water soluble(an assumption, are they?, don?t know.)
If this is the case, then the mushrooms growing from this area, and absorbing water as they grow, should have some of the toxins in them.
Or am I completely off...?

well, in my opinion, the key to understanding the core issue revolves around the transportation of toxins from one place, the mold site, to another, the fruit body. we can assume that at least some molds do give off toxic materials, which would accumulate in the immediate area. but there is no circulatory system here, no moving water to dissolve the toxin and take it elsewhere. the cellular membranes are quite specific about what chemicals get inside the mycellia itself, so one would have to further assume that the mycellia percieved the toxin as useful, as a food source for example, and internalized it. there is at least some evidence that this can occur in other shroom species, as certain lignin-eating species have been used to clean up dioxin spills. but, here's the catch. even if the cubensis mycellia did internalize a toxin, it most likely would break it down into other compounds that it uses, much as we digest food. the long molecular chains would be broken apart by enzymes, and the pieces would be harmless. so, it seems pretty safe to conclude that as long as one actually cuts out any contam itself, and dries the shroom thoroughly, that the fruitbodies would be safe to eat. of course, there is a slight risk, and everyone needs to decide for themselves what's acceptable to them. that said, i think it would be immoral to share any shrooms salvaged from a contam'd substrate with anyone who was ignorant of the source.

In reply to:

I read that post. He wasn't in the hospital because of eating a "contaminated mushroom".
In reply to:
I've seen people swear to never do shrooms again because of a bad trip
So have I ! But it had NOTHING to do with contamination, just to high of a dose!
In reply to:
Could any of em crossbreed into your mycelia? You bet your ass they could!
Really? Do you think I can't tell P.C. from other mushrooms? Or are you saying that I'll magically get some crossbreed strain? Do you have a clue? Wouldn't it be neat if that's all it took to crossbreed mushrooms?
In reply to:
You think that you just happen to have the same contamination as Moe does? And it will affect you the same?
Apparently you don't get it! No matter what the contamination is, it OBVIOUSLY doesn't get into the healthy mushrooms.
Prove to me, beyond a doubt, that contamination in a cake grown outdoors can be "absorbed into a mushroom". And then, I'll listen.

A DARE Officer? That's really cold. I've been tokin as long as some members here have been breathing. Early in my shroom research I learned (right or wrong) to equate contamination with danger. The only reason I said anything was out of genuine concern for my fellow shroomites. Cops (around here anyway) don't care if druggies are sick or dead. I'm sorry if I pissed everybody off. I'm definately not a cop. Just an electrician with a few bad habits, a microscope, and a toothache.
Hippie, I have to say you're smarter than I thought and an asset to the community. I must have overlooked one of your post or I might have caught on sooner.
Live and learn, I guess.

<< If the grey mold is stronger and it likes straw/dung as much as it does BRF, then it'll win and shrooms will never appear.>>>>
...untrue...i have had several jars colonizing and set aside due to confirmed contamination (green mold) some jars milder than others but some in which mold has nearly taken over the entire network. after time gone by the jars pin invitro and shrooms most definitely foolow. HUGE knarly ones often. i have harvested them before, dried and consumed a very small dose and became ill. this is simply my personal experience, as hippie states we each have to decide what risks we can tolerate personally but i believe it wouldn't be right to share these fruits without disclosing their origin. when dealing wih fruits from a contaminated source, what doesn't make one person ill could possibly cause a violent allergic reaction to another, just as one example.
but i am interested in your results good luck and keep us posted!

A friend(really a friend) told me that he mixed the spawn of P. azurescens and P. cubensis and cased it. The P. cubensis that fruited out if this were reportedly much stronger than normal P. cubensis.
I?m only telling you what he told me, though, I have no "proof", but I know the guy good and I have no reason not to belive him.

of course, there's no way to know why he percieved them as stronger, it might well have just been his own expectations [placebo effect] or it could be a coincidence. i think a non-psilocybe would be a better test, as suggested. if a button mushroom picks up psilocybin from a cubie, then i'll believe chemicals can move from shroom to shroom intact.

matts, the difference is that cakes allow the contamination of one species to have an unfair advantage and run rampid through the substrait, allowing an abnormlly large amount of toxins to form without space to dilute or other organisms to break them down. The cow crap mother nature thing allows for some homeostasis or equilibrium(if either of those two are the right word)

Generally species cannot cross breed but their are exceptions. Mules for instance are a cross breed between a horse and a donkey (2 different species), but mother nature takes care of this by making all mules sterile.

What happened to your friend could have been perhaps fertilizers used on the lawn, or insecticides, sucked up by the mycellium?

He grew on a seven foot tree
Then one day I plucked him
To roll him and smoke him
And now I can barely see!

In reply to:
Species can't interbreed, if they could, a there would be a bunch of human-sheep running around on farms in the south.
HEY~!!!!! im from the south and have yet to hear of a farmer around here fucking a sheep. BAHHH.
I think we should all just know wakinguplate doesn't know what hes talking about.... Thats the only flaw in the internet, people who think they know everything have the ability to post as if they do. Then its up the end user to interpret this information as fact or fiction... But this thread obviously shows us what he knows.
