A question about size of outdoor mushrooms
    #1535262 - 05/09/03 06:31 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Hello friends. I think I read that mushrooms growing outdoors (be it naturally or not) are usually shorter, but have meatier stems, than those grown artificially indoors. Is there any truth to this?

For anyone who's done Moe's Tek or any similar outdoor teks: Would they turn out shorter than if they had been grown under artifical conditions (i.e. indoors)? It would be nice if they would be shorter, as they wouldn't stand out like sore thumbs in people's outdoor patches.

Regards.

I have found that outdoor cubes tend to be smaller in size, but its almost a totally different mushroom. The stems on mine were very "crispy" almost like a celery crispy, or lettuce. However, what it comes down to really, in the end, is this.... Size of the patch/batch is directly proportionate to the size of your fungus. Anyway, good luck in your outdoor project(s), and i hope this helped....

Peace

that crispiness is probly attributed to the dry air that wouldnt be there indoors

Magash,

I would like to point out to you and others that these large shrooms are very rare in their natural habitat of cow-pie manure heaps. There are maybe one to every thousand of regular short stemmed P. cubes growing from manure, a large specimens or two..

The large one came from my friend Nong who picked it in the fabulous rice paddie fields of the Muslim Village of Ban hua Thanon. The sporeprint from this large shroom went on to become the BHT from the Hawks eye.

Of course indoor cultivation can also produce these large shrooms from clonings and from nutrients and compost used to grow them indoors.

Here are the images you posted above.
