How do you use agar?

Does anyone have any links to some good agar teks or anything? When using agar do you like let the mycelium grow on the agar and then case the agar with bird seed or whatever and then case that with the vermiculite or what? Also, I heard something about making brown rice flour paste and using it as if it was agar... anyone know anything about that?

What you described might work just fine. You can get a little more mileage from your agar cultures by slicing them up and dropping the slices into prepared grain jars (1 or 2 slices per jar). Cutting the slices as triangles works well.

Some folks will put the agar culture into a blender w/ sterile water and chop them up into a liquid innoculant. Then they inject that solution into a prepared substrate.

Some folks find working with agar cultures fun & interesting. It's also a good way to work with a dirty print and/or to isolate a strain within a culture. You can get free sample from Moorhead Agar. The sample (two 8 oz packs) should last you a good long time.

I was going to get one of those free samples but seeing as how I am new to this I didn't know which one to pick.

These are 2 different species of seaweed agar is extracted from.
