agar to grain question
    #4422376 - 07/19/05 06:34 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

3 days ago i inoculated 5 grain jars with a completely colonized petri dish. they are all colonizing VERY slowly, except one: the one that got the agar slice including the central part (agar from a previous generation petri dish), which is almost completely colonized by now. why? isn't the whole petri the same substrain as the central piece?

For the one jar that is growing faster you probably used mycelium that had better rhizomorphic growth than the rest of the myc on the other agar plates. You should always try to isolate the faster growing myc on the agar plate by cutting it out and putting it onto a fresh agar plate. When it grows it will "sector" and you will see slightly different types of mycelium growing. Keep cutting out the most rhizomorphic growth and starting a new plate until all you have is mycelium that grows very fast and rhizomorphic. This will ensure that you have some vigorous mycelium to work with.
