I have been a consumer of the following drugs, not prescribed by a doctor:(i)two alcoholic drinks a year from 1954 to 1957,(ii)one package of cigarettes a day for thirty years,1964 to 1994 and (iii) the occasional aspirin, pain killer and calming pill, perhaps half a dozen times a year since 1954, fifty years. Hardly worth commenting on, unless one has a rabid anti-cigarette philosophy.
But under the direction of a medical doctor I have had half a century of regular medications, first as a child from 1946 to 1956 for a range of illnesses one of which was polio-like nearly causing my death; and then from 1964 to 2004 for various manifestations of my bi-polar disorder. I will summarize this latter experience at a later date in a comprehensive fashion.
More recently I have come to see this bi-polar experience as my personal horror story, my chaos narrative or a gift from the gods depending on ones perspective. From time to time I submit it at various sites on the internet, sites that have an interest in the subject of mental illness. It may be a little too clinical for some readers, lacking in pizzaz-adventure-and-excitement, but it contains its own degree of very real horror--the only horror that I have tasted in life and a horror that has been virtually alleviated since 1980. This is no fantasy creation for middle class readers.
Hey Ron, thanks for sharing your story. I understand to a degree as my mother has a bi-polar disorder and is also on Lithium. Glad that you have made progress in recent years. My mother also seems to have stabalised, though she will probably be on Lithium for the rest of her life. Wish you all the best in leading a normal life. Dave
Yes, I have recently gone onto a combination of sodium valproate and effexor and it is delightful. I have also updated my story at another place on this site. Thanks for your encouraging and positive words, folks. See ya lateRon!
