What determines the size of the mushrooms
    #312957 - 05/09/01 07:46 AM (22 years, 24 days ago)

Besides genetics, what determines the size of the fruits? Say if you were growing cubensis, and the mushrooms grow and mature, but they remain small (2" high), what could be causing this?

Smallies grow when the substrate is thin. How thick is yours? For 2" shrooms, my guess would be about 1" in thick (if you have cased rye).

Also, it's probably the first flush, right? Subsequent flushes will grow larger.

If my friend has cased rye in a container could she crumble a brfverm cake and case that also in the same container to increase the depth of the substrate?

Are you asking permission?? :)

I my foaf was in your shoes, he'd scrape the casing off. Then cut the substrate in half and stack one on the other (bottom to bottom probably). Then, if you want to risk it, case the other cake(s) along side it. This assuming you're dealing w/ two different cultures/strains. So the idea is to give each culture some casing area in which to fruit.

If you're dealing with the same strain, crumbling on top may work OK. You'll probably never know for sure because it'll cost you in lost crop. Third-personally, my FOAF wouldn't do it that way. :)

It is the first flush, and the substrate thickness is about 1" thick, at least that's what I was told by a FOAF.
He'd like to thank each one of you for your help.

Next time go 3--4" and you'll be golden.

...and now he knows where his shoes are!

Often if there is just one shroom, it will be large but if there is a few, then they will all be smaller. It's a question of much nutrients there are to spread around.
