actually if you could use styrofoam as a substrate you wouldnt have to sterilize it. but what i heard was that this person used straight styrofoam and the fungus colonized on it and began a normal growth cycle.

Straight styrofoam? I don't thing their are many nutrients available in styrofoam. I mean if it won't biodegrade for a million years in the wild, then how could a mushroom possibly get nutrients out of it. I've heard of people adding shredded sponge as a replacement for vermiculite but never of using a nutrient-less substance for a mushrooms substrate. I think someone was pulling your leg.

If I rembember correctly it was the green block of foam for making flower arrangments. Somthing was soaked into it and the mycelium thrived on it. Anyone rembember specifics?

Go to the fake flower dept. at walmart and look for the block of green foam used to put flowers in. pasturize it in a bath of wheat straw juice, or manure juice. Then colonize . . Dont use regular styrofoam because it when melted is toxic to mycelia.

old doc charlie of drooldonkey did some experiments with floral foam last year. as i recall, the spores germinated and grew a little but he never was able to get it to fruit. don't think anyone else did, either.
