Tyvek question
    #3086404 - 09/03/04 07:30 AM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I just recieved some Happy tyvek from my loacal post office. Now You say tyvek is waterproof? does that mean i can fully submerge my jars using the pf tek. I have to boil becuase of the lack of a pressure cooker. just was thinking i could double stack my jars and that would make everything great time savings that is.

I'd never had a contam with tyvec... are you sure it wasn't your syringe or something in your technique...

polyfill is the stuffing they use in most comforters, pillows and stuffed animals, the best source invilves making your little sister cry and ripping the heads from her teddy bear...

or simply buy a large batt for $2 at walmart in the sewing/crafts section.

They use it to stuff pillows and beadspreads and whatnot. You can get it in the sewing section of walmart.

No you don't want to fully submerge your jars.

Don't double stack jars if you aren't using a pressure cooker.

tyvek is almost paper thin, right? i thought the envelope would be more of a foam... is it self healing? otherwise don't you risk contams?

Yes you have the right stuff. Use a piece of tape over the hole, after you inject.

Gas exchange. Lets air particles pass (myc need this) but not contams.

Tyvek can grow contams but only if you get the 75% envelopes then the other 25% (paper) can soak up juices if you turn your jars upsidedown for days and they have a bit to much water in them then you get green growing on top of your jars. Thats not tyvek contaming but paper soaked in rye juice but still  You can pour alcohol on the top though then case jars if colonized and have them make it. Happened to me on 4 jars and all 4 casings made it.. Make sure you get 100% tyvek though and you shouldnt have a problem.

The 25% in envelopes is not paper, it is tyvek made from recycled plastic.

If you want to be really resourceful use the tyvek sticky adhesive strip as your tape, cut into small rectangles and place over inoc. hole.

Then wouldnt it be 100% Tyvek? Recycled or not its still Tyvek yet the envelopes say "75% Tyvek" on them. This leads me to believe that the other 25% is paper.
