Either should work, but the stuff at the post office is a lot cheaper.

AFOAF told me to go into the post office general area, and theres racks there with envelopes, big ones that hold 11X14 sized paper. Look for the smooth one that shines a little, there a cross between plastic and paper.

There free because they charge you when you go to ship the product and thats how they recoup the money for it.

can tyvek be used to make microvented spawn bags? I really have no need for microvented spawn bags but I was wondering if tyvek can be used alone as an air exchange on jars without other media and the idea came to me that perhaps this material could be heat sealed or taped to bags. i guess the trick is can Tyvek survive the pressure cooker?

Yes it can. You usually don't want to have a total seal of just tyvek. You want to put some tape on it to prevent too much air echange, and drying out.

Tyvek for UK playas [Re: TxTec]
    #1670671 - 06/29/03 02:43 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

not strictly relevant to your question - you Americans have easy access to Tyvek from many sources, whereas we Brits do not. I live in the UK. I looked everywhere for it.  eventually i got a lifetime's supply posted by ordering from a kite supply shop (4 metres by 1 for $10):

indeed it can. the post office tyvek is heavier duty than the kite-making kind, i have both but now prefer the post office's.
but tyvek lets in alot of air so it only takes a small patch to have plenty, too big and stuff dries out.
only other draweback i've seen is sometimes the rim band cuts the tyvek at the edge, ruining the jar as it quickly contams.
but that's rare.

Pat was wondering what is the best way to use it with colonizing jars, but then she got to thinking about making her own grow bags from rolls of autoclavable material. she's broke and it would help to make them.

She was wondering what the best way to create a filter for jars. she read something about using tyvek with poly fill. no more explanation was offered

Can it be heat sealed or would she have to tape it to make a grow bad that would survive the PC? No need to spend much time on this question she can just go get some and try

Other than those 2 questions she's just looking for general tips for using it

TIA

just cut a piece of tyvek into a square/circle big enough to cover the jar,
place it on, screw down lid band. you're set. inject thru tyvek to innoculate then cover hole with duct tape.
it'll survive pc'ing just fine.

So if someone were to use one pint jars with metal lids and the metal covers .. would you poke holes in the cover and then put tyvek underneath it.. or dont you need the metal cover thing, like you would just put tyvek over the jar then put the outer "ring" of metal creating a white top covered completely with tyvek?
