incorrect. Tyvek envelopes are breathable . you can't blow through it easily . so what, is that all the testing you have done ? Tyvek paper is a breathable 'vapor' barrier .

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong! This is just loads of bad information! If tyvek envelopes are not breathable, then why does my substrate tend to dry out when I use tyvek envelopes? If anything, tyvek is more breathable than polyfill. Look up tyvek on duponts website. It is a breathable material. Regardless of what it is manufactured into. Tyvek suits might be more breathable, but my jars need very little air exchange anyway. Have you ever tried growing in a jar without air exchange? They stall. End of story. You need air exchange to full colonize a jar. How then could dozens of long time growers be wrong about tyvek envelopes? This is bullshit!
Oh, and do a search for bandaids in the forums. Others have tried them and found a HIGHER CONTAMINATION rate than polyfill or tyvek.
And polyfill is plastic, It doesn't wick contams! Tons of people use polyfill no problem.
This is just stupid.

From what my FOAF has done, he never uses any type of filter, just cracks the lids a bit with the lids upsidedown and leaves the tinfoil over the jars, then innocs through the tinfoil and puts medical style fabric tape over the innoc hole...24 pint corn jars....not one contamed with full colonization in under 2 weeks

Medical style fabric tape has been known to work well. It's tried and true. Not band-aids though.

The reason I was asking about different types of tyvek is that I'm using it to cover the abnormally large exhaust holes in my terrarium, so I think that the more breathable boilersuit tyvek will be better, as in a terrarium a large amount of air exchange is necessary.

Some of you people are crazy.
IF You can colonize a drinking glass with aluminum foil over it, It's a no brainer you can colonize with a ramsel seal lid with a hole, and a bandaid.
If you say so. I am sure it is working for you, but that doesn't mean it is the end all be all of methods. Different things work for different people.
Quote:
The grain in your jars is going to decompose. Everything organic will decompose sitting in water. Tyvek envelopes let out little, if any, water vapor. especially through a 3 cm hole cover with aluminum foil. I am 100% positive that experienced grain growers have experienced soggy sour decomposing jars using tyvek envelopes.
This is BS. You ignored the question already brought up. If Tyvek doesn't breathe, why do jars dry out if too much surface area is exposed. Furthermore your grains should not be sitting in water. If they are, they are to wet. Most people don't cover filtered jars with foil either.
Quote:
as grain decomposes, it needs to release the extra water, or it will sit at the bottom causing the rest of the jar to decompose. By slapping a sterile bandaid over the hole, and not putting aluminum foil over it, your jars will let out more moisture and air exchange, preventing that sour smell.
Again, if you have a problem with this your grain is to wet. Personally as cheap as polyfill is and as good as it works, I don't see why anyone would use anything else that costs money. To each his own.

Oh and there is a big difference between colonizing a pf jar with tinfoil over it and colonizing a jar of grain. Grain contaminates a lot more easily. Others in the past have experimented with bandaids and claim that they contam more easily than polyfill or tyvek, but yes the jar will usually colonize fine.
